Gay dating apps: a comprehensive guide to jack’d, grindr, hornet, scruff and the rest

There was a time when gay dating was an IRL affair, based around your local gay bar or well known cruising spot. Now, finding a guy usually means grabbing a phone and browsing your options.

While a lot of people decry the decline of gay bar culture, there’s no denying that dating apps are the most popular method of meeting people in 2018. With that in mind, here’s a run down of the most popular gay dating apps for queer men.

Gay dating apps: a guide that is comprehensive jack’d, grindr, hornet, scruff together with remainder

There was clearly an occasion whenever gay dating ended up being an IRL event, based around the local homosexual club or well understood spot that is cruising. Now, finding a man results in getting a phone and searching your alternatives.

While a lot of people decry the decline of homosexual club culture, there’s no denying that dating apps will be the many popular way of fulfilling people in 2018. Understanding that, right right here’s a rundown of the very popular gay relationship apps for queer males.

Why do gay apps struggle to stop catfish?

Hornet will be the first of the major gay social networks to let people earn a badge of authenticity.

The aim is to give users more confidence that they are talking to a genuine person.

But rather than moderators checking ID, the app will use algorithms to decide who gets a badge.

So can machine learning solve the problems that persist on dating apps?

Anyone who has used a gay dating app will be familiar with fakes.

Messages arrive from improbably handsome strangers, often angling for intimate photos or sexy chat.

These so-called catfish profiles use pictures stolen from popular social media stars or adult-film actors.

They lure people into conversation, sometimes trying to arrange dates they will never show up for. In more serious cases they try to defraud, blackmail or harm their victims.

So why do gay dating apps not offer a „verified“ profile badge, like on Instagram or Twitter?

„Not everyone wants to or even should be identified,“ said Eric Silverberg, chief executive of dating app Scruff, which competes with Hornet on the app stores.

„People often create new, repeated or anonymous profiles, for many valid reasons,“ he told the BBC.

„Once you start verifying some, you create a kind of hierarchy on your platform that could lead to unintended consequences for people who are not out of the closet.“

hornet becomes first gay social app to house native editorial content

Today, Hornet, the world’s premier gay social network, announces the launch of Hornet Version 4.0, which will bring native editorial content into the Hornet app, a first to market feature for an LGBTQ social network. Hornet will rebrand two highly-successful editorial websites, Unicorn Booty and Vespa, and fold them into the newly redesigned Hornet experience. The content will be found natively within the app under the “Hornet Stories” and “Hornet Places” tabs. The redesigned app combines the consumer appetite for breaking news and pop culture with the pursuit of meaningful connections.

In an era when many LGBTQ publications have folded, Hornet is building and expanding a global newsroom of award-winning LGBTQ journalists. With the Version 4.0 release, all 25 million of Hornet’s social app users now have access to the original breaking news and pop culture headlines via Unicorn Booty and community-curated travel tips and information from Vespa through “Hornet Stories” and “Hornet Places.” Web browser users will still be able to find all previously published and forthcoming editorial content on Hornet’s website.

“While other LGBTQ apps have shied away from creating content through their main brand identity and have created separate editorial brands, Hornet is leaning into the brand equity it has built with its loyal user base. We’re creating a complete social networking ecosystem for the gay community bringing content and connecting together,” said Christof Wittig, Hornet’s CEO and co-founder. “Each update to the app brought us one step closer to unifying the fractured way we consume LGBTQ-focused news and connect with each other across social apps. This marks the first time an LGBTQ brand has been able to do that.”

Hornet’s primary social media function that made it a global gay phenomenon remains, where guys can connect over commonly shared interests and stay in touch with their followers via comprehensive profiles. In the brand’s Version 4.0 overhaul, iOS and Android users will be able to fully access “Hornet Stories,” “Hornet Places” and find various LGBTQ-themed events from within the app itself, without the need to switch to multiple websites, apps or browser tabs. Users will now be able to share news, places or content of interest to them directly to their profiles.

“The gay community has been sorely lacking in breaking news and cultural information relevant to today’s world,” said Sean Howell, Hornet’s president and co-founder. “Bringing two editorial brands into the Hornet family completely upends the way a typical gay social network functions and how the gay community can and will consume news. Now, instead of simply asking the cliché ‘looking?’ users can leverage what they’re reading as conversation starters. We’ve evolved into a hub where gay men can hunt for meaningful connections while staying informed.”

Hornet is the world’s premier gay social network. Founded in 2011 with the mission to build the digital home for the gay community, Hornet has grown to 25 million total users by utilizing cutting-edge technology for its dating platform and producing original editorial content to connect a community around common interests. Hornet provides a superior user experience and is number one in the key markets of France, Russia, Brazil, Turkey and Taiwan, and is consistently expanding its sizable user base in the United States. Which dating site is right for you?

Hornet is one of the best gay apps/sites in the world, with over 25 million users worldwide. It’s unique, and the main aim is to build a “digital home for the gay community.” It has built a digital gay community based on mutual respect and understanding. Let’s face it; this app/site is one of the best things that has happened to the gays in a while.

Hornet’s features and exciting content has made it a preferred choice for many. This site/app has been a significant source of inspiration to the gay community as a whole. Has the reputation been as a result of hype? Or is it true? You are about to find out, check out the hornet review below.

Hornet members are between 18 and 34; they are majorly bisexuals, gays, and bicurious men. The editorial content attracts the LGBT+ community as a whole. It also appeals to women, and non-binary people willing to follow trends about LGBT+.

Mobile app and website

For Hornet, the app and website are mediums to link and connect members of the gay community. The app presents a lot of captivating features like the home feed, which displays queer related content. The community has access to more fun on the app, and this has helped this dating app achieve its goals. The website is equally rich with interesting queer related information.

Real life review

The positive and negative reviews written about Hornet is almost balanced, although it’s tilting more towards the positive side. Here are some of the reviews from members:

According to thaurane, the fact that chatting is free is attractive, and the ads are less interruptive. But in his area, there are only about 10-15 people around, which makes it less Interesting. A bigger city would make all the features worth it. Only one bot has been encountered, which is good news compared to other gay chat apps.

“It’s a good app. I wish the messaging feature had a filter so you can receive messages from only the people in your preferred category… Getting messages from a 60-year-old while you are 20 could be creepy” _ Karma Buns

“I have been on this site for 10 months, and I still haven’t been able to post anything, not even my profile picture.” – Stephen Gideon

“It keeps crashing… In response to the message I got, I don’t have to email you, why not just fix the app, take a look at all the reviews, I am not the only one complaining about the same issue” – Jairtzinio Ortiz

“The app is great. It only needs to be upgraded to reduce the way the account blocks”- Zoom Fish

Conclusion

Hornet site/app is a place for members to enjoy and freely express themselves. It brings you a connection with like-minded guys regardless of your location. If you are gay, bisexual, or bicurious, you have nothing to be worried about. Explore the app/site, enjoy the features, meet new lovers, meet new friends, and in the long run, you will realize Hornet gives more than hookups. It provides a family founded on mutual respect and understanding.

LOS ANGELES, Jan. 24, 2019 /PRNewswire/ — Hornet, the world’s premier gay social network with 25 million users globally, has declared a rapid shift of men using gay apps, 100 days after launching its Version 5 with a brand-new home experience that makes it easier than ever to connect in more meaningful ways.

Now, more than 60% of Hornet’s active users are engaging with content on the new home feed, which surfaces queer-relevant content, by liking, commenting or posting content themselves. Content helps users to identify interests and shifts the focus of connecting with other gay men away from their physical proximity, features or stats, which were the hallmarks of the first generation of gay apps. Content includes in-depth Stories.

„Engagement times are up 20% across the board,“ says Christof Wittig, co-founder and CEO of Hornet. „People browse the feed and discover aspects of gay life digitally that were not accessible to them before. No matter whether their interests lie in entertainment, sports, culture, sexual health or travel, Hornet enables gay men to connect with a network of many millions of gay men in a relevant and safe way.“

Hornet is already the number one gay app in markets like France, Russia, Brazil, Turkey and Taiwan, and is rapidly expanding its sizable user base in the United States. Correspondingly, original daily content is created across multiple languages, by Hornet users in different regions. Every day, over 1 million users upload real-time moments from their lives and chat with other users on the network.

Users confirm that gay men care about more than hooking up. „As a Moderator and Health Ambassador, I can help people by offering advice. The app has been a great way for me to meet nice people and spark friendships.“

The Hornet feed is also a favorite feature of MaximArtois is also a fan of Hornet’s community programs, which he says „help establish social responsibility among users.“ He likes the articles available inside the app, which he notes enable users to follow what’s going on around the world. He says: „I trust Hornet and the team behind it. I think it’s the most responsible gay app around, and the most advanced and up-to-date.“

„According to AppAnnie (bear-magazine.com), over 90% of gay men are not using a gay app today,“ says Wittig, „because they loathe the limited utility for dating or hooking up provided by incumbent apps. It is our mission to give gay men of all walks of life a digital home to connect in many and more meaningful ways.“

Grindr

Grindr, you may have heard of it? Launched in 2009 as the first ‘geosocial’ dating app (i.e. you can see who’s nearby), Grindr has grown to dominate both the actual market and the entire concept of gay hookup culture.

The general consensus is that Grindr is only for hookups, but this isn’t necessarily true. As is the case anywhere a lot of people gather, there’s something on Grindr for everyone – from one night stands and fuckbuddies to long term relationships.

That being said, if you’re looking for a brief encounter, Grindr will do the job, as it’s more of a free-for-all than some other apps with little restriction on who you can talk to. All you need to do to get started is sign up, set your preferences and scroll through guys close by. If you’re using the free version, be willing to suppress your rage at the incessant ads.

As is also the case with large gatherings of people, there’s a lot of bigotry and generally unacceptable behaviour on Grindr. A lot of this stems from the fact that users have license to be incredibly specific about their wants and desires, which apparently for some people means being specifically terrible.

Awful behaviour aside, there are a lot of pros to Grindr. Mainly, it has the most users. You can also be as anonymous as you want or as open as you’d like with your gender, preferred pronouns and status. People are also pretty trigger happy with pics, if you’re into that sort of thing.

Since a change at the top in 2016, Grindr has been on a one-app mission to be the centre of gay universe, with big events, an online magazine and a gay emoji keyboard. Basically, it isn’t going away anytime soon.

Scruff

Scruff, as the name suggests, is the hairier, bearier alternative to Grindr. The age range of users skews a little older than its main rival, and they are more uniformly of the muscular persuasion.

Scruff has been on the scene almost as long as Grindr, so it’s also amassed a large user base. As with Grindr, the amount of users has diluted its USP, so it’s not exclusively ‘scruffy’ guys on there, just mainly, and still overwhelmingly masc.

If masculinity isn’t high on your list of priorities, I wouldn’t necessarily look here. Scruff is hookup oriented, but does have a ‘match’ function if you’re looking for dates.

Being slightly more niche appeal than Grindr, Scruff doesn’t have the same critical mass of users, nor the cultural clout. However, if you see the word Scruff and don’t immediately shout ‘Oh Scruff Pit Crew’ in your best Mama Ru voice, then why are we even doing this?

Having sponsored the Pit Crew in the sixth season of Rupaul’s Drag Race, Scruff secured its position in the psyches of gay men everywhere, and it’s worth checking it out for this alone.

Jack’d

As mentioned, when you get a lot of guys together, bigotry tends to rear its ugly head and send you unsolicited nudes. Jack’d presents itself as an alternative to the divisiveness of other gay dating apps, and there’s proportionally more POC on there.

It works in much the same way as Scruff or Grindr, but with some additional features like more photos and the ability to see who’s been looking at your profile. You should be able to find both hookups or relationships on Jack’d, but it is a little more NSA friendly.

Hornet

Hornet’s USP seems to be ‘we do Grindr better than Grindr’. While Grindr’s functionality is notoriously clunky, Hornet works much better, with less intrusive ads, interesting side features like in-app articles and more photos. In practice though, you use Hornet much the same way as Grindr.

Hornet is pitched more towards being a community platform than just a gay dating app, and you’ve got the option to follow people for updates or see events and stories.

Community aspects aside, you’re more likely to find a one night stand on here than a husband. Hornet has been slowly beating out other apps worldwide through its news and content delivery, especially in Brazil, but has yet to dislodge Grindr and its other rivals from the top spot in the UK or US.

Chappy

You’re probably most familiar with Chappy from it filling every available ad space on your social media.

Chappy’s ‘USP’ is that you can slide a scale at the top of the app to select ‘Mr Right’, ‘Mr Right Now’ (clever) or ‘Mr Who Knows’ to find guys who are looking for the same. You can then swipe, Tinder style, through the filtered buffet. You have to log in through Facebook, so there’s much less room for anonymity.

Chappy is the brainchild of Made In Chelsea’s Ollie Locke, who was looking for something different from the other gay dating apps on the market. In reality, Chappy feels more like a ‘rich person decides to be entrepreneur’ kind of project, especially as most apps give you the ability to state exactly what you’re looking for, albeit in the much less fun form of ‘words’ rather than a sliding scale.

Regardless, Chappy has the backing of Bumble founder Whitney Wolf, it works pretty well and there are plenty of guys on there to swipe through. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find most of them on the ‘Mr Who Knows’ point of the scale.

Tinder

And finally, Tinder. Whereas Tinder was once thought of as Grindr for straight people, the ability to set your preferences to find other gays has made Tinder an increasingly popular choice.

Gay Tinder is to straight Tinder what Gay Twitter is to regular Twitter, i.e. the same, but gayer! You log in, set your preferences, and then swipe your way through the oncoming onslaught of men.

Tinder’s default setting is straight (eye roll), so you have to change it to find your fellow gays. With the free version, you have a limited number of swipes per day and limited access to extra features like ‘Super Likes’ and ‘Boost’.

By its nature, Tinder is geared more towards dating than hookups, although that’s not to say you can’t find both. There’s lots of guys on the platform, so you’ve got good odds of finding someone.

Jack’d

As previously mentioned, when you are getting a lot of dudes together, bigotry tends to rear its unsightly head and deliver you unsolicited nudes. Jack’d comes up as an option to the divisiveness of other gay dating apps, and there’s proportionally more POC on there.

It really works in much the same manner as Scruff or Grindr, but with some extra features like more photos therefore the capacity to see who’s been considering your profile. You ought to be capable of finding both hookups or relationships on Jack’d, however it is a bit more NSA friendly.

Chappy

You’re most likely most knowledgeable about Chappy from this filling every ad that is available on your own social networking.

Chappy’s ‘USP’ is you can slide a scale near the top of the application to pick ‘Mr Right’, ‘Mr Right Now’ (clever) or ‘Mr that knows’ to find dudes that are searching for the exact same. After that you can swipe, Tinder design, through the filtered buffet. You must log in through Facebook, therefore there’s significantly less space for privacy.

Chappy could be the brainchild of built in Chelsea’s Ollie Locke, who had been searching for different things through the other dating that is gay in the marketplace. In fact, Chappy seems similar to a ‘rich person chooses become entrepreneur’ kind of task, particularly since many apps supply you with the power to state just what you’re trying to find, albeit into the notably less enjoyable type of ‘words’ as opposed to a sliding scale.

Regardless, Chappy has got the backing of Bumble founder Whitney Wolf, it really works pretty much and there are lots of guys on there to swipe through. Unsurprisingly, you’ll find many of them in the ‘Mr Who understands’ point for the scale.

Tinder

Last but not least, Tinder. The ability to set your preferences to find other gays has made Tinder an increasingly popular choice whereas Tinder was once thought of as Grindr for straight people.

Gay Tinder is always to straight Tinder what Gay Twitter would be to regular Twitter, i.e. The same, but gayer! You log in, set your requirements, then swipe the right path through the onslaught that is oncoming of.

Tinder’s default setting is straight roll that is(eye, which means you need certainly to change it out to get your other gays. With all the free variation, you’ve got a restricted amount of swipes each day and limited usage of additional features like ‘Super Likes’ and ‘Boost’.

By its nature, Tinder is geared more towards dating than hookups, although that’s not to imply you can’t find both. There’s plenty of dudes in the platform, and that means you’ve got good likelihood of finding somebody.

Privacy

More than 70 countries around the world have laws against LGBT people.

ID checks would create a list of „verified LGBT people“ that could be used by those wanting to do harm, including governments.

They would also raise barriers for those exploring their sexuality. If most users chose to verify their profiles, newcomers may find fewer people speak to them if they have not gone through the verification process.

Hornet says its system will not involve checking ID.

Instead, algorithms will evaluate how people behave on the app over time. Profiles that are judged to be genuine will display a „Hornet badge“ as an indicator of trustworthiness.

The company said it would not disclose exactly how the algorithm works because that might help catfish work out how to trick the system.

But Hornet chief executive Christof Wittig told the BBC: „We look at people and how they earn trust while they interact with the community. It requires people to be authentic and interact.“

Analysis

Hornet combines the social elements of apps such as Instagram with the meet-up aspect of apps such as Grindr.

The „verification“ system will analyse how people use those features, to weigh up whether the activity is consistent with genuine users.

Mr Wittig stressed that the algorithm would not look at the contents of private messages.

And because many people in countries with anti-LGBT laws do not use a selfie as their profile picture, the system will not involve any image analysis of profile photos either.

Of course, fake profiles can be very convincing – they are carefully crafted to be deceiving.

Could a catfish profile earn a „Hornet badge“ and add a mark of authenticity to their fake profile?

„In theory, yes,“ said Mr Wittig. „There will always be that one person who will put this super extra effort in, and there will always be some that fall for it.

„But with this system, the amount of work versus the probability of reward changes. We are making being a fake profile very costly. They can no longer do it at scale.

„And even then once you know somebody is a catfish, their pattern is better understood. The machine learning has much more data to really understand how catfish behave.“

What about members who do not want a „Hornet badge“ because they are worried about being exposed for using an LGBT app?

Mr Wittig said it would not be possible to opt out of the system but he said members would still be able to be discreet about their identity.

„People in some countries don’t put a face picture up because it’s so dangerous, but they can still be verified by the system,“ Mr Wittig told the BBC.

Rival apps

The BBC invited rival dating apps Grindr and Scruff to share their views on user verification methods.

Scruff told the BBC: „The bigger question is why bad actors continue to proliferate on some platforms, and the answer always comes down to one thing – leadership.“

„We have always prioritised moderation and community support, because we are building an app that we ourselves use and share with our friends and loved ones. When people misuse our platform, we react swiftly and decisively.

„We have spent years building advanced technologies to stop spammers, catfishers, and other bad actors.“

Fakes and scammers

Hornet is after the gay community’s safety at large, which is why the dating site was founded. It seeks to eliminate any possible risk. There are safety tips that serve as guidelines on how to avoid fakes and Scammers. Discussing any private information without getting to know who you are dealing with is dangerous.

To find out if a user is real, you can FaceTime or have a video call and stay away from model pictures profiles.

Hornet app

The app is widely used in various countries like Russia, France, Brazil, Turkey, and the UK. It is supported by android and IOS. On the app, men can locate men that are close and men from anywhere in the world. The app content, news, and updates are all geared towards the LGBT+ community. You can follow other users to get updated when they make any changes to their profile.

pay for gay…

Many people is against payments online… but software empowering costs, and this is a fact we cannot be against… so, in a middle-style way, maybe there can be a way to co-operate with hornet in a work-instead-of-money payment… but hornet does be into it with hornetcommunity, so, why being in pain about payments?

spammers have ruined this app

…. and Hornet seem not to care. I could cope with the legitimate advertising, after all, the app has to be paid for somehow and there is always the option to upgrade to an paid for version with no ads. BUT Hornet have proved incapable of filtering out the fake profiles who “send you a pic” which is basically a bear-magazine.com or bear-magazine.com of an advertisement to a rival dating site. Well, Hornet, you’ve not done anything about that. So by the time you read this I’ll have deleted your useless app and that’s one less person who will ever view your legitimate advertising. Your legitimate advertisers might be interested to know just how many potential targets are deserting your app in droves because you seem incapable of dealing with the spammers.

app is now terrible so i deleted it

Sadly this app has succumbed to spammers resulting in multiple messages each day trying to redirect you to another supposedly rival site. The process to report and block each profile that does this (as requested by hornet) is time consuming and still weeks on yields no results. A lot of my friends have drifted away from this app over the last year and I too have now deleted my account. Seriously guys, there are other apps out there where the developers seem to give a crap about keeping our community safe. I wouldn’t waste my time on this one – besides, all the profiles on here are the same ones you get on the other popular yellow gay app 😂

How safe is hornet?

Hornet is one of the most thorough online dating app/sites ever. Strict measures are taken to enforce the safety of all the members. Although this is true, users’ security cannot be 100% guaranteed without the help of the users themselves. Safety is necessary, so protect yourself and be smart about it.
