actrs Kimiko Glenn got a foreign-royalty statement the mail om the screen actors’ unn, <em class="small">SAG-AFTRA</em>. Glenn is bt known for playg the motormouthed, ialistic mate Brook Soso on the women’s-prison seri “Orange Is the New Black,” which ran om 2013 to 2019, on Netflix. The orchid-pk paper listed episos of the show that she’d appeared on (“A Whole Other Hole,” “Tst No Bch”) alongsi ty amounts of e (four cents, two cents) culled om overseas levi—a th slice of pie om the show that had thst her to promence. “I was, like, Oh, my God, ’s jt so <em>sad</em>,” Glenn relled. Wh many televisn and movie sets shuttered, she was supportg herself wh voice-over jobs, and she’d been msg around wh TikTok. She posted a <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">vio</a> which she sns the statement—“I’m about to be so <em>riiich</em>!”—then reach the grand total of twenty-seven dollars and thirty cents and shrieks, “WHAT?”</p><p class="paywall">The post got more than four hundred thoand lik and nearly two thoand ments, many om disbelievg fans: “Wa how is that even legal??” “how is this even real you were on one of the biggt flix shows.” This past May, wh screenwrers <a href=">on strike</a> and labor unrt sweepg Hollywood, Glenn reposted the vio on Instagram, where she has almost a ln followers. This time, not only fans but stmat weighed . Matt McGorry, who played a rrectns officer: “Exaccctttlllyyy. I kept my day job the entire time I was on the show bee paid better than the mega-h TV show we were on.” Beth Dover, who played a manager at the pany takg over the prison: “It actually COST me money to be season 3 and 4 sce I was st lol hire and had to fly myself out, etc. But I was so exced for the opportuny to be on a show I loved so I took the h. Its madng.”</p><p class="paywall">When “Orange” premièred, ten years ago this week, broke ground multiple ways. Created by <a href=">Jenji Kohan</a> and based on Piper Kerman’s <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">memoir</a>, the show was ribald, off-kilter, playfully knowg about female sexualy, and sharp-eyed about the prison-dtrial plex. Although centered on Piper (Taylor Schillg), a sheltered, blond yuppie adjtg to life mimum-secury lockup, s sellg pot was the huge, multiracial, largely female ensemble, which, as <em>The New Yorker’s</em> Ey Nsbm <a href=">observed</a> at the time, reprented a “tly imprsive array of prisoners, played by actrs of varyg ag and appearanc, cludg typ rarely shown on TV.” The seri was also a breakthrough for Netflix as was transng om a DVD-rental-by-mail service to a streamg pany wh s own ntent; “Orange” arrived jt a few months after “<a href=">Hoe of Cards</a>.” Wh “Orange,” Nsbm noted, Netflix was “quickly tablishg self as a real rival to ble.” The shift me wh a new viewg pattern: bge-watchg, which an entire season uld be nsumed at once. “Hoe of Cards,” anchored by the star power of Kev Spacey and Rob Wright, brought the pany stant prtige. But “Orange” was a ground-up phenomenon, wh a fervid fan base that would bge, bge, and bge aga. The show’s naway succs was a rnerstone that helped build the Netflix brand, which turn built the streamg enomy, which has now taken over pretty much the entire dtry.</p><p class="paywall">A on, however, some of the st feel disillned about how they were pensated, both durg the origal n and the years sce. Televisn actors have tradnally had a base of e om riduals, which e om rens and other forms of rse of the shows which they’ve appeared. At the hight end, riduals n yield a fortune; reportedly, the st of “Friends” has each ma tens of lns of dollars om synditn. But streamg has scrambled that mol, endangerg the abily of workg actors to make a livg. “So many of my iends who have nearly a ln followers, who are dog billn-dollar anchis, don’t know how to make rent,” Glenn told me. That stggle has brought <em class="small">SAG</em> to the precipice of a potential strike, thorized by more than nety-seven per cent of about sixty-five thoand votg members. (The negotiatn adle, after an eleventh-hour extensn, is tonight.) In certa ways, “Orange” was an early ditor of how lopsid the streamg enomy would be, and a number of st members are now nflicted: they’re proud to have been on such a progrsive, fluential show, but feel shortchanged out of the wealth that created. “We all took a risk together,” Alysia Reer, who played the rpt warn Natalie (Fig) Figueroa, said. “And the reward for Netflix do not seem le wh the reward for all of who took that risk. I n go anywhere the world and I’m regnized, and I’m so eply grateful for that regnn. Many people say they’ve watched the seri multiple tim, and they quote me my l. But was I paid a mensurate way? I don’t thk so.”</p><p class="paywall">I spoke to ten actors om the show, many of whom spent several seasons as “recurrg gut stars,” meang that they had substantial rol over numero episos but weren’t part of the re group tegorized—and pensated—as seri regulars. (Acrdg to <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>TV Gui</em></a>, Schillg was paid thirty-five thoand dollars per episo 2014—far more than a day player, far ls than Téa Leoni’s hundred and twenty-five thoand for “Madam Secretary,” on CBS.) “The first thg we say to each other when we see each other, is, like, ‘Yeah, ’s really fucked up—all my riduals are gone!’ ” Emma Myl, who spent six seasons playg Leanne Taylor, an ex-Amish meth addict, told me. “It’s always the first thg to e out of our mouths, bee ’s so crazy and unjt. And everyone thks we’re kajillnair.” When Myl was st, for the first season, she was havg a rough time (astrologilly speakg, she lled a Saturn return om hell): she’d lost a rtrant job, then was displaced by a hoe fire, <em>then</em> moved to a new apartment that had bedbugs. She was about to give up on New York when she got a three-episo offer for “Orange.” “I would expla to people, ‘Yeah, ’s for Netflix,’ and they were, like, ‘Oh, wh the envelop? That’s cute.’ ”</p><div><div class="ConsumerMarketgUnThemedWrapper-iUTMTf jssHut nsumer-marketg-un nsumer-marketg-un--article-mid-ntent" role="prentatn" aria-hidn="te"><div class="nsumer-marketg-un__slot nsumer-marketg-un__slot--article-mid-ntent nsumer-marketg-un__slot---ntent"></div><div class="journey-un"></div></div></div><p class="paywall">“Orange” was distributed by Netflix but produced by Lnsgate, which termed the st’s up-ont payments. Myl was paid sle, <em class="small">SAG</em>’s mimum rate, which was unr ne hundred dollars per day. “They uld and would pay the absolute bare mimum, and there was really no wiggle room,” she relled. Her ntract was append wh <em class="small">SAG</em>’s 2012 New Media Agreement, which vered projects “produced for ial exhibn via the Inter, mobile vic, or any other platform known or which hereafter may be adopted” (now known as half of TV). <em class="small">SAG</em> had origally dified the agreement 2009, after a yearlong standoff wh the studs. At the time, streamg TV was mostly theoretil, except for the unr-five-mute “Webisos” that “Lost” ran on The ntractual terms were—and rema—much worse for actors than those of “lear” TV. (This is a major source of ntentn the actors’ current standoff wh the studs.) Tradnal broadst seri pay riduals for each re-airg, lculated as a percentage of the actor’s salary. The 2012 New Media Agreement entled Myl to riduals only after the first fifty-two weeks the show was on the platform; the amount was based not on how many tim each episo was watched but on a percentage of the licensg fee that Netflix paid Lnsgate to distribute the show. (If this sounds nfg, don’t worry—the actors also fd bafflg.) Myl still gets around six hundred dollars a year for a handful of gut spots on “Law & Orr: Special Victims Un,” stretchg back to 2004, but her riduals this year for “Orange” have e to around twenty bucks.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Netflix didn’t share s viewership numbers (and still mostly don’t), makg harr for the actors to negotiate higher salari. When she joed the st, Season 2, Glenn was livg subsidized hog Flatiron. Bee the show didn’t pay for her transportatn unls her ll time was before 6 <em class="small">A.M.</em>, she eher had to take the subway to the stud Astoria or pay for a taxi herself. “The b ris wouldn’t have been such a big thg if we were paid enough that didn’t feel like we were spendg our paychecks on .”</p><p class="paywall">Dpe the Beatlemania-like fame, many st members had to keep their day jobs for multiple seasons. They were wag tabl, bartendg. DeLaria ntued dog live gigs to keep up wh her rent. Diane Guerrero, who played the fashnable mate Marza Ramos, worked at a bar, where patrons would regnize her. “How uld you tell this plete stranger how much you’re gettg paid for beg on a televisn show?” she asked. “Bee everyone’s reactn would be, like, ‘Oh, my God, I love you on that show! But also, what are you dog here?’ It was this crly that was teeterg on offensive.” Myl was workg a basement for a fancial firm, actg live simulatns for aspirg fancial planners. One day, one of the ndidat psed on the phone and said, “You sound exactly like the Amish meth head on ‘Orange Is the New Black.’ Has anyone ever told you that?”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">For a while, there <em>were</em> more substantial riduals—only bee Netflix didn’t ver every terrory on the pla, and Lnsgate uld rell the rights to ble channels overseas. All that dried up as Netflix went global and the show aged, and the riduals slowed to a trickle. “As the seasons progrsed, we started to get more disgntled about money, mostly bee of how credibly popular the show was,” one actor told me. “And then felt, like, Well, my iends on work shows are credibly wealthy.” The seri regulars were eventually paid up to two hundred thoand dollars per episo, while the supportg st ma no more than fifteen thoand. Lori Tan Chn, who appeared six seasons as the mate Mei Chang, <a href=">told</a> <em>Time</em> that she’d ma so ltle on the show that she uldn’t afford the boxed sets; she nsired gog on food stamps, until she was st on the Comedy Central s “Awkwafa Is Nora om Queens.” Beth Dover relled, “They’re tellg , ‘Oh, we n’t pay you this much, bee we’re pchg penni.’ But then Netflix is tellg their shareholrs that they’re makg more than they’ve ever ma.” She add, “We have not been fairly pensated by any stretch of the imagatn.”</p><p class="paywall">Startg 2015, “Orange” won three nsecutive <em class="small">SAG</em> Awards for Outstandg Performance by an Ensemble a Comedy Seri. But the st of attendg the ceremoni rankled some actors, who would have to fly themselv to Los Angel and supplement the small stipends (if anythg) they’d receive for bety needs. “As the show got more and more known, my budget went down and down and down for any type of hair and makp for awards shows,” Taryn Manng, who played Pennsatucky, said. Another actor reunted feelg “aquate” bee she uldn’t afford a signer drs and—like many a st that clud a range of body typ—uldn’t jt grab a size 0 off the rack. “It sounds like champagne problems,” Glenn said. “But ’s expected of you.”</p><p class="paywall">Before one <em class="small">SAG</em> Awards ceremony, the st attend a hoe party thrown by Ted Sarandos, then Netflix’s chief ntent officer and now s -C.E.O. Several actors remember that Sarandos gave a toast braggg that more people watched “Orange” than “<a href=">Game of Thron</a>”—a rare sliver of transparency about the ratgs. (One actor lled a “whoops” moment.) But the st found the le ls upliftg than gallg; if the show was really more popular than “Game of Thron”—whose top st members have been said to make more than a ln per episo by the end—why were the salari for “Orange” so paltry? DeLaria told me, “I remember all of thkg, ‘Give the money!’ But we were always sayg, ‘Give the money.’ We were keenly aware that we weren’t beg paid.” She add, referrg to her riduals, “I get twenty dollars! I would love to know: How much money did Ted make last year?” (Twenty-two ln salary, pl stock optns.)</p><p class="paywall">At the end of the fifth season, the seri took a creative left turn: the mat, havg staged a prison rt, are spl to separate b, and the ma characters are sent to maximum secury. The change settg was rehg, but meant wrg off much of the supportg st. Several actors said that they hadn’t even been told what was happeng. “Everyone was unr the imprsn that an entire b of people was basilly gettg fired,” Myl relled. “Those looks on our fac as mat are beg load onto those b—‘Where are we gog?’—that was not actg. Never knowg if you were a moment away om beg killed off.” (Her character overdos the penultimate episo.) Though more actors were promoted to seri regulars as time went on, many who appeared nsistently were stuck as recurrg gut stars. “As an actor, that’s a rrot that is always gettg held ont of you,” Guerrero said. “If you dite enough, and if they like your character enough, you get the possibily of maybe one day beg a seri regular.” Some actors scribed the atmosphere on set like that of a fun sleepover, but others said that a hierarchy emerged, exacerbated by a wi dispary pay. “It wasn’t jt money. It was also rpect,” DeLaria said. Marie-Lou Nahhas joed durg the fal season, as an Egyptian-born mate at an <em class="small">ICE</em> tentn center. “When I me on, the baggage of the tratn was already there,” she relled.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">How uld a show so popular pay so ltle? One reason was the sheer size of the ensemble, mostly unknowns. At the begng, the show was an experiment, and the tight budget was seen as a tra-off. “We were workg outlaw untry,” Tara Herrmann, one of the wrers and executive producers, told me. They were ee to say or show most anythg, she said, exceptg erect penis and, some ternatnal markets, swastikas. “We didn’t have to answer to rporate sponsorship. In a way, that’s why I always felt, like, O.K., so maybe the payouts aren’t as lucrative, but the offshoot is we get all this creative eedom.” She reunted a meetg wh Netflix, which she’d been told that the actors were gettg a raise. “They were sure to expla that the pay bump wasn’t ntractually obligated but a pensatn they felt was overdue. I remember sayg that I’d hoped the raise would put our st on par wh our sisters at ‘Game of Thron’ or any big HBO show. But I don’t thk did.”</p><p class="paywall">Kohan (who cled to be terviewed) had ltle say over the actors’ salari, and she and her staff were jt as the dark about the ratgs as the st was. The day after the fal season’s première party, Herrmann went on, “Jenji and I were brought to a nference room, and they fally shared the numbers wh : a hundred ln ers had seen at least one episo, and I want to say at least half had pleted all six seasons. From an artistic standpot, those numbers are breathtakg. And, om a bs perspective, absolutely staggerg. After revealg the numbers, the executive asked , ‘How do hearg this make you feel?’ Jenji was silent and looks to me, and I said, ‘Like I want to renegotiate my ntract.’ ”</p><p class="paywall">As forward-thkg as “Orange” was, some people I spoke to saw Hollywood’s old bld spots at work. DeLaria observed, “I thk some of this was bee we were a female-centric show. I don’t thk there’s anybody out there who don’t know that women are paid unequally to men. We n pot at this show and really see .” One reprentative blamed Lnsgate for lowballg the st, particularly the actors of lor: “The show was very much an ensemble. However, there was signifint dispary between the pay of certa non-mory st members and many actors of lor who were the fibre of the show.” (Lnsgate and Netflix cled to ment on the rerd.) That dispary likely had roots the narrative evolutn of the seri, which ially centered on Piper and her ex-girliend Alex Vse (Lra Prepon) but grew to a te multiracial ensemble piece. Danielle Brooks, who played Taystee, arguably the show’s emotnal anchor toward the end, <a href=">has said</a> that she was paid ls on the fal season than the lead child actors ma that same year on “<a href=">Stranger Thgs</a>.”</p><p class="paywall">All this is particularly ironic, given the show’s poted crique of an exploative palist mache, a rceral system that mak mat work for penni. Granted, prison is many tim worse than a stgy Netflix show, but the parallels, Glenn said, were “unnny.” <em class="small">SAG</em>’s ll to arms has only remd the “Orange” st that their role the streamg revolutn has a dark unrbelly. “We need to update the system,” Dover told me. “They’re fdg ways to cut our wag, and so the middle-class workg actor is screwed.” Although the show lnched some st members—Uzo Aduba, Laverne Cox—to high-profile reers, others have stggled. That’s not unmon show bs, but ually starrg on a worldwi h leav you wh some fancial chn. “When you’re a kid, you have this ia: once I’m on somethg that people actually see, I’ll be rich, and I’ll have a hoe that has a bathtub,” Myl said. “And you look around after beg on a h show, and you’re, like, Wow, I’m still the same one-bedroom apartment.
