On “Baed,” Ziwe subjects non-Black people to terviews about race that quickly bee quisns. It is a fantasy edy of entrapment which the Black woman toss whe naïveté down the hatch while playfully hoardg the lock and key. There is no right answer, say, to Ziwe’s mand of a whe woman gut, a famo ok, to “name five Black people off the top of your head,” bee Ziwe is not askg a qutn. And yet the gut works hard to answer good fah, to look racially hip the face of the ludicro, bee she believ, whether she will adm  or not, that her reputatn is hged on a kd of obeisance.</p><p class="paywall">Last year, “Baed” moved to Instagram Live. Its new home, where polics are all about appearance, seemed appropriate; Ziwe qutned the legimacy of the whe ally’s existential crisis durg our summer of quote-unquote racial reckong. What is that posss whe people to agree to speak to Ziwe? Wantg to look good? The fear of beg irrelevant? The sire to participate a phenomenon that they unrstand to be culturally Black, even at the promise of huiatn? Last year’s guts were often public figur who had said or done somethg offensive, somethg that threatened their social pal. And Ziwe, stead of givg them the stern but lovg reprimand that s of “Oprah” tght them was their due, ed them for her personal project. The asymmetry was there even the spl-screen prentatn of the show: the sombre terviewee, hair often pulled back, rpectfully distanced om the iPhone mera; Ziwe lookg like a glammed-up madam, wh pastel eyeler or full-length glov, nosg up to the mera so that we are starg down the verns of her nostrils, her brandished gums.</p><p class="paywall">The Instagram seri has been expand to “Ziwe,” a rnivalque variety-style talk show, produced by A24 and airg on Showtime. Vanguard talent such as Cole Esla, Bowen Yang, Patti Harrison, Sydnee Washgton, Jul Torr, and Jeremy O. Harris drop , lettg know that we’re the hottt pany. Ziwe, drsed geo high-femme outfs that verge on the parodic, is our mented girl boss, our anchor, which means we are always a b seasick. The athetic is <em>athetic</em>—most of the set is shad pk or s rivativ, cludg potted plants on the stage. There are amed photographs of Michelle Obama and Oprah on the walls, and gigantic storybooks on the floor—a wk at the spir of fx tellectualism. Formally, “Ziwe” scends om the news-satire mol of “The Colbert Report”—Ziwe, an acplished televisn wrer, once terned for Colbert—but her show aspir to more than beg a vnted “challenge” to whe-male-domated late-night TV. The début season—six episos, full of absurd gam, mil sks, and more of those unfortable terviews—ends up amountg to a creepg self-portra of s namake, renred through flashy criqu of race and the media. The soul of the Ziwe persona was not really accsible via “Baed,” or through her heavily layered Inter character—possibly bee she is still sortg out the particulars for herself. In the fale of the Showtime seri, a repeated visual motif is of Ziwe, barg her teeth, as she grabs at the edg of an old-fashned televisn set. Early on, Lebowz, legs crossed, warns Ziwe that she don’t play gam, a utn that the host summarily ignor. Lebowz, to prove her progrsive bona fis, begs to crique Barack Obama, and a chyron reads “Whe Woman Has Opn on Obama.” (The edors of “Ziwe” are as much rponsible for the queass of the terviews as Ziwe is herself.) As Lebowz speaks, her words are bleeped out. The chyron: “We will not be airg this bee we want to go to the Roc Natn Bnch.”</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Here is the profoundly ventive element of “Ziwe”: the sendup of the Black grifter, the personaly who explos a sire for renciliatn, and genly twists the fetish of Black female moral thory, for her own ga. The segment also feels dated, strangled by the unimagative neologism of the ght summer that preced .</p><p class="paywall">We know what Ziwe wants to dismantle. But what do this self-scribed “agent of chaos” want to create? In terviews, Ziwe, a maven of self-promotn, claims that she se her form of tic satire as the ndu to a nontatnal tn. And yet “Ziwe” the show is psimistic about the Amerin belief the power of anti-racist enlightenment. It’s possible that “Ziwe” has a glorly retributive bent, that is satire that do not serve a higher purpose, that simply lights lettg the jab s and stg. The pot is to watch people squirm, not to hear them speak. Although the six episos ver different topics—immigratn, bety standards, wealth equaly—“Ziwe” returns repeatedly to the hypocrisi of liberal sats and stoog. In one segment, Ziwe viss a plastic-surgery office, and gets an affable whe surgeon to suggt that her nose uld be more refed. She gets Andrew Yang to embarrass himself more than he already has. She mak Gloria Steem listen to her rece the lyrics to Cardi B and Megan Thee Stalln’s “W.A.P.” It’s like a kk.</p><p class="paywall">I found myself most terted “Ziwe” when the host was the prence of other Black women— other words, when the Ziwe persona was put to the tt. In a recurrg segment lled “Behd the Wrers Stud,” Ziwe bas her own wrers, ridg them for their participatn the sketch that she herself missned. In the fale, she brgs out Michelle Davis, who has wrten, and performed , a fx-mercial which Harriet Tubman hawks sports bras. Ziwe tells Davis, “I thk the lson here is that you n be Black and anti-Black.” This is the show’s tricky apotheosis. Davis turns the tabl on the host, sistg that she isn’t anti-Black, and lnch to a rendn of the Black natnal anthem, “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sg.” Ziwe, one-upped at the game of one-uppg, n do nothg but
