I’d gotten volved wh the Gay Activists Alliance, and time we’d started our first gay magaze, OUT, 1973, but only lasted two issu before foldg. The discsns wh Chuck end up nvcg me there was such a thg as gay lerature and, more importantly, that a change of nscns, a change our imagatns, had to be the first step fightg for gay rights.
So we end up foundg Christopher Street 1976, one of the first gay lerary magaz—and that got me fired for good om Maclan. ) At each one I’d put a py of Christopher Street on the table and say, “Look, I’m gay and publicly volved wh this gay lerary magaze, so if that giv you a problem, we should jt fet about the job and enjoy lunch, sce this is a very good rtrant and you’re payg for . I only knew bee they had published a uple of the earlit gay books (Gee Weberg’s Society and the Healthy Homosexual, along wh Roommat Can’t Always Be Lovers and Fire Island by Lige Clark and Jack Nichols).
