2018. Jt a year later at the 2019 gatherg of the dtry’s brightt mds, Matthew had plenty to celebrate wh his much-buzzed-about short film <em>Lavenr</em>. It tells the story of a young gay man who fds himself entangled the liv of an olr married uple, touchg on them such as sexualy, the gay muny, <a href=">non-monogamy</a>, and more. Jt as <em>Lavenr</em> premiered the Shorts Program, <a href=">Fox Searchlight announced</a> that had acquired the rights to the short film and would make available to watch on social media. He grew up outsi of San Francis, and although he was ially terted theater, found his way to the world of film while at New York Universy. He’s already got a uple of projects unr his belt beyond <em>Lavenr</em>, cludg his other short <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank"><em>The Ms You Ma</em></a>, and is workg on his first feature film. When did you realize you wanted to translate those to film and what chang did you want to make?</strong></p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p><strong>Matthew Pucci:</strong> I started wrg about that experience actually for an applitn to a Sundance episodic lab and had a very different stcture to , but was a dynamic that I was really fascated by. In the procs of adaptg , I thk most of, if not all of the tails of the relatnship, are totally fictnal and very much wrten for the film. But I was still tappg to this re feelg as a young gay man sudnly realizg that I wanted a liftyle and a matury of a relatnship that I hadn't really ever seen for myself or been close enough to the past to nsir. Everythg I was wrg was kd of g back to that ia. As I wrote and was startg to rearch other stori that have put unnventnal relatnships the foreground, beme creasgly important to me to make sure that me emphasiz the timacy and the tenrns of the relatnship as much as the sexualy and the kkier aspects of .</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-1 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p><strong><em>TV</em>: When you fally started stg and filmg, how did the origal script change when the IRL ponents started g to play?</strong></p><p><strong>MP:</strong> As soon as you start stg and brgg actors to the fold, pletely chang the film. Always for the bt, I thk. We were so lucky to get some of the lovely gay actors om the Broadway and off-Broadway scene New York to be this movie, cludg <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Michael Urie</a> and <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Ken Bart</a>. Luckily, they had all actually already known each other before we even had st them. In our nversatns, they brought so much to the table terms of really tryg to ppot what the arrangement was between the three men, which I had left very vague the script and tryg to make sure that even though the relatnship do end up unravelg that never felt like the olr uple was takg advantage of the younger person any way and that they still had some gree of agency, pecially stg <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Michael Hsu Rosen</a>, who is half Che and a person of lor, wantg to make sure that didn't feel like this whe uple tokenizg this younger actor, or this younger person and I thk, hopefully, we achieved that balance.</p><p><strong><em>TV</em>: There’s a b of a surprise endg. Was that always origally there?</strong></p><p><strong>MP:</strong> It was actually there om the very begng. And I thk was somethg that probably a lot of people told me to take out and change, but felt important to me to leave bee I thk ntu to make the dience qutn their ia of what a relatnship is supposed to look like and [that] love n happen parallel ways, don't always have to be monogamo. And while certaly, that n be the se, was important that this short, I thk, unrled that there's equal potential for timacy and potentially even healthier relatnships jt by virtue of really equally fulfillg the sir of all the people who are volved. Obvly, requir maybe an extra amount of munitn, but even though the film ends wh [the relatnship] not ntug, wantg to show throughout the film how n work.</p><p><strong><em>TV</em>: What was the edg procs like?</strong></p><p><strong>MP:</strong> I did the first few cuts of the film myself on <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Adobe Premiere</a> and then end up actually brgg another edor to fish the film and help me do some rtcturg. What was kd of lovely about this film is that bee 's really a seri of small vigt, there was room the ed to move thgs around to achieve the right amount of ambiguy and also really kd of st this spell of creatg the world of their relatnship. So some piec fely did move around, like the openg one of the three of them at the piano was actually more of a midpot at the begng the script. So 's lovely.</p><p><strong><em>TV</em>: What advice do you have for an aspirg filmmaker that might not have all the rourc the world available to them?</strong></p><p><strong>MP:</strong> The bt thg you n do is fd people your day to day life who you tst and rpect and nvce them to work wh you. But I thk I would also say that 's obvly tricky wh filmmakg bee is such an expensive and llaborative art film, but jt don't wa around for someone to give you the key or to say y to you. Films n be ma for unr a thoand dollars and 's totally about havg a voice and somethg to say that people haven't heard before. If you feel like you have that, don't be timidated by not havg the fancit mera or the perfect st. Go out and make somethg.</p><p><strong><em>TV</em>: What sort of <a href=">queer</a> narrativ do you want to see more of film?</strong></p><p><strong>MP:</strong> I would say wh all of the shorts I've ma, and I've jt been fishg up post-productn on a new one, the hope is to put queer narrativ on the screen that are this middle space between mp, which I love, and tragedy, which I don't love so much. [I’m also] wantg to tell stori about queer ruals that exist past the g out narrative that we seem to be gettg stuck . Even though my two most well-known films have been about gay men, wantg to also expand the queer narrative to clu people who are maybe ls seen on screen.
