As GSG we were the anisers of the first Lbian and Gay Mardi Gras which was preced by a gay rights street march through Sydney on the morng of Saturday, 24 June 1978, followed by an open lbian and gay Fom the afternoon and that night at 10pm the mardi gras para. The Sydney events were to serve a double purpose - to highlight the Stonewall gay rights events the Uned Stat and to draw attentn to our own discrimatory laws, vlence agast and mands for equaly and an end to police harassment. What happened at the night para - the btal arrts of 53 lbians and gays - shocked not only Sydney but the world via televisn and newspaper pictur of the police vlence.
That change has been slow and hard fought and still has a long way to go spe the appearance the prent Gay and Lbian Mardi Gras giv which cintally was origally a mid-wter para and only later changed to mid-summer. We have reprentativ of LGS attend the Anti-Discrimatn Board's lbian and gay nsultatns which date back to 1982 (for the latt ADB newsletter see: Equal Time Autumn 2008 edn). Our members have been volved groups such as Communy Support Network (CSN/ACON), Gay Wav (a weekly gay and lbian rad program on 2SER-FM)(closed down abptly by management of 2SER-FM early 2005 after more than 25 years of servg the gay, lbian and transgenr muni) and the Orr of Perpetual Indulgence (Gay Male Nuns and Lbian Monks - a very polil actn group and open to lbians, gays and others).
