As profsors of social studi tn at Teachers College, Columbia Universy, we clu gay history our curriculum. In discsg our work at natnal nferenc, we have been gratified to learn of efforts ma by teachers, pecially New York and California, to troduce gay issu to social studi classrooms.
Wh the last year, the virtual silence among social studi teacher tors about this topic was broken when an entire issue of our field's rearch journal addrsed approach to the teachg of gay issu.

30, 2002 • To the Edor: "Gay History Is Still the Closet, " by Richard Goldste (Op-Ed, Oct. 30), rightly creds Harry Hay, Del Mart and Phyllis Lyon as the gay and lbian muny's hero and laments that so few know of their achievements.
While high schools and lleg are sktish or unterted rporatg gay history, there are other sid factors at work. Age-phobia and homophobia drive olr gays and lbians to visibily and margalize all as we age.

Unls we equally value people of all ag and acknowledge that many who built gay and lbian history ntue to live vibrant, tertg liv today, we will never have the strong muny we need to take to the future.

" As a profsor of clil psychiatry, I know that view is not only rrect but fosters antigay prejudice.
