What has changed sce then?</strong></p><p><strong>Sarah Schulman:</strong> When I fished my book, New York was at early-stage gentrifitn, so we were seeg terracial neighborhoods and cross-class neighborhoods beg gentrified by private bs that were aimed at the gentrifitn class, the people who grew up the suburbs and were reenterg the cy.</p><p>That is really not what gentrifitn is anymore bee those people were driven out of their bs and replaced by chas. So there are a lot of banks, a lot of CVSs, Dunk' Donuts, the typ of plac, and then there are thgs that look like mom-and-pop stor, but they’re actually also chas.</p><p>Now, how do that affect the culture? Well, ’s plex bee everythg is changg and ’s very hard to know where we are right now. We have a <a href=">young generatn that’s very pro-unn</a> and has been volved succsfully challengg <a href=">some</a> <a href=">anchis</a>. They’re not like the young people I was wrg about, who were pletely bought off by certa promis. The system is dysfunctnal now.</p><p>And how do this affect queer people? It really pends on where you live right now. You n be a totally assiated, to-the-power-stcture gay. Could you say more about that?</strong></p><p><strong>SS:</strong> It’s plex bee my generatn om <a href=">illegaly</a>, no reprentatn, and a <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">mass ath experience</a>. Our reali are not those thgs now. Of urse, we have an emotnal memory of those thgs and that affects how we unrstand thgs. Younger people haven’t experienced those thgs. But they may.</p><p>I was jt talkg wh somebody the other day about this. Today, you n be a lbian woman of lor who has an MFA om a very prtig school, who n wre a g-of-age novel and get the bt agent New York, get published by the bt publisher, and get top-of-the-le awards om the dtry, and a few years ago that was not possible. But what’s weird is that there’s no look back at all the other works that paved the way for that moment that were discreded or margalized. If people looked back and said, “Wow, now we see that this work is great. Why don’t we go back to all the people who were dog this before, who we treated like garbage, and reevaluate them,” then they would be trouble. Bee the people who they did reward, all those now-irrelevant whe men who domated Amerin lerature for so many years, they would have to be reposned. And then what do that say about gatekeepers?</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>So, they kd of pretend like none of that ever happened, and this thg jt me up bee the apparat is so kd and clive. That is kd of a crisis of meang, even though hasn’t been articulated.</p><p><em><strong>TV:</strong></em> W<strong>hat should young queer people who are terted nnectg wh that history be lookg for?</strong></p><p><strong>SS:</strong> Younger people need to read the history of their lerature. People need to know where they me om and why their moment is possible. That ’s not simply bee they’re good or great. Overpraise is a strange poison. It separat you om your own history and who built your ntext for you. So, whoever is gettg succs, and gettg accs, and gettg money on that level, they need to look back.</p><p><em><strong>TV:</strong></em> <strong>You have a lot to say about MFA programs </strong> <em><strong>Gentrifitn</strong></em><strong>.</strong></p><p><strong>SS:</strong> Well, they're clearly stctive to the lerature at large bee of the selectn procs, streamlg, bt cursn, and mostly llective fluenc for an art form that pends on dividually acquired fluenc and athetics. And you n tell by readg. You get the really tertg wrers who have stori to tell that are excg. And often, their books are formulaic bee they went through a certa kd of MFA program. But unfortunately, today, if you're not that system, and you're not rich and nnected, you n't get , which is tragic.</p><p>Havg an MFA is not only sential for gettg to the apparat, but is required for employment. I jt started a job at Northwtern. I'm an MFA/MA dual-gree program where every stunt is fully fund for three years and every stunt gets a $35,000-a-year stipend. And I'm tryg to unrstand how to work wh this nscly, so isn't a repetn of the standg dilemmas.</p></div></div></div><div class="GridItem-buujkM fVLMby grid--em grid-layout__asi"><div
