Gay Street Cema. Gay Street,. In the early-1970’s, there were two adult movie theaters on Gay Street.
Bis the Bijou Theatre, which was then showg X-rated movi, there was also the Gay Street Cema which had opened on September 25, 1969. Dpe the name, they showed straight, not gay, movi. Lyric Theatre (Gay Street).
On September 26, 1872 Knoxville’s first opera hoe, Stb’s Theatre, opened on the rner of Gay Street and Cumberland Avenue. Throughout the 20th century, the LGBT muny has had a signifint and disproportnate impact on the Broadway stage, even as the New York Legislature-enacted Wal Padlock Law (1927-1967) ma illegal for theaters to show plays that featured gay and lbian characters (though some productns managed to get around this rtrictn).
LYRIC THEATRE (GAY STREET)
Opened as the Theatre Republic 1900, this venue staged two known works by gay playwrights, one by Cly Fch and the other by Roi Cooper Mege.
