1981. CAPAL GAY
On 26th June, 1981, Graham McKerrow and Michael Mason (a former director and news edor of Gay News) published the first issue of Capal Gay.
It was London’s first cy-wi gay newspaper.
The ee paper was published weekly and distributed through pubs, clubs, bookshops and other gay-iendly outlets. In April 1983, followg the llapse of Gay News – Bra’s only natnal gay and lbian publitn – Capal Gay announced would ‘temporarily’ extend ’s distributn area to selected gay clubs areas such as Nottgham, Manchter and Newstle.
CAPAL GAY.
The aim was to provi an ’emergency’ news service until such tim as a new natnal gay and lbian publitn emerged. It never happened: ndidate publitns such as Gay Reporter, the New Gay News and (unsurprisgly) HIM magaze all tered exclively or predomantly to a gay male market. And so, July 1985, Capal Gay announced that was reluctantly endg s out-of-London distributn.
The very fact that had extend s distributn the first place dited how different Capal Gay was om the other publitns of that perd. It actually sponsored London’s Lbian and Gay Swchboard and, wh the emergence of the HIV/AIDS crisis, ran the world’s first weekly lumn on AIDS, wrten by Julian Meldm.
