Where a ntemporary like <a href=">Dave</a> traed his foc on <a href=">the meta stctur</a>, <a href=">Stormzy</a> on <a href=">the spirual</a>, H is utterly physil: his ic posturg, the way he rolls words on his tongue like hot food, his juvenile scriptns of sex, and—more so than perhaps any other rapper workg the UK at the moment—his abily to make even the stifft listener move. More specifilly, he’s terted what means to be a man. Driven by this quiry, <em>Betiful and Btal Yard</em> ends up a sprawlg tome on the nuanc and prsur of Black masculy. The album’s tro implor H to show people the real him; the rt of <em>BABY</em> is the sound of him figurg out what exactly that means.</p><p>After 2020’s <a href="><em>Big Conspiracy</em></a> was mired by leaks and a forced sh release, H effectively disappeared om public life. (The fact still h No. 1 the UK spoke to his unique fluence.) He wrote off live shows and sequtered himself the stud, emergg sporadilly as a featured artist. It was around this time, you sensed, that H started wonrg where he tly belonged. “I was my home but I was feelg like a foreigner,” he raps over a tumblg bassle on “Comeback.” In <em>BABY</em>’s <a href=">album trailer</a> we see him pulled between untry tate and social hog. Long-time llaborator JAE5 is absent om the wrg creds, chewg his ual anchor role, but the album still boasts a remarkably nsistent sound, thanks to keen terplay om the lik of TSB, iO, and Levi Lennox. Thumbed, hall party highlife bassl are refigured for a new generatn—though some of the more choice lyrics about “the fger blaster” and stickg a “thumb your an” might raise more than blh among the nti and uncl. The stmentatn is plh and anic: Dms slap and mble, sk on sk; guars glisten. If 2019’s “<a href=">Mt Be</a>”—all sex-groove sax and murro threats—was H experimentg wh a distctly Black Brish take on G-funk, then those trials have reached maturatn here.</p><native-ad posn="-ntent" shouldDisplayLabel="te"></native-ad><p>All this opens up pockets for H to explore and subvert the clichés of morn masculy. He’s endlsly playful wh language, toyg wh his vowels on “Massacre.” He channels the ironic East End gangsterism of Guy Rchie movi and grime MCs on “Come Look,” where timate scriptns of vlence play off agast threats to whack someone’s “nogg.” The charisma wh which he rri off only emphasiz how awkward <a href=">Drake</a> is drong on about “your backsi” beg “so f” on summer ont-nner “Who Told You.” Other guts to the H hoe fare better. <a href=">Naira Marley</a> is pure arm’s-length ol on “Milerian”; Villz repris his road-rap sikick role om <a href=">a 2015 Crib Ssn</a> on “Comeback”; and <a href=">Burna Boy</a> livers a hook for the ag on thematic centerpiece “Mascule”—spltg the word “balaclava” to an exquise uplet. It’s the kd of touch that would seem simplistic if didn’t e drippg wh so much charm.</p><p>Back 2017, H <a href=">clammed up</a> wh shyns at a mentn of the Wolof nickname, “baba,” that his mum gave him. “I thk means baby or somethg my language,” he said. Six years later, as <em>BABY</em> draws on ( do lack some of the pactns of <em>Big Conspiracy</em>), H raps a whole song his mother tongue.
