We are an excg novative lbian and gay mental health chary based East London. ELOP was tablished around 1995 as a grassroots veloped and muny-led anisatn wh the aim to promote the mental health, wellbeg, empowerment and equaly of lbian, gay, bisexual and trans (LGBT) muni. Many of the closed venu, such as the London Lbian and Gay Centre and the Joer's Arms, played ccial rol anisg queer ristance movements.

Beyond a place to exhib and support LGBTQ+ artists, Joer hop that the venue will functn as a safe space for the queer muny durg a time of risg homophobic and transphobic hate crim: a recent Stonewall report found that two five trans people Bra had to al wh a hate crime or cint the past 12 months.

LSE Library holds the Hall-Carpenter Archiv, which ntas the papers of gay activists and anisatns, ephemera and related journals. One such group is the Black Lbian and Gay Centre south London.

Durg the early 1980s, black lbian and gay groups Bra began to emerge, such as the Gay Black Group.

LONDON LBIAN AND GAY CENTRE

The London Lbian and Gay Centre was a lbian and gay muny centre loted at 67–69 Cowcross Street, London. It was tablished 1985 by the Greater London Council (GLC), which donated three-quarters of a ln pounds to s 1984 The GLC published Changg The World – * lesbian and gay centre london *

They faced homophobia, racism and, for women, sexism.

The Greater London Council (GLC), led by Ken Livgstone, had progrsive gay and lbian polici and was keen to award grants to projects which supported mory groups. In 1982 the Gay Black Group approached the GLC to requt fundg for a centre which would provi advice and unsellg, a helple, a library and other rourc. The Black Lbian and Gay Centre received GLC fundg 1985 and was open to all lbians and gay men.

On 31 October 1987, the UK saw s first ever natnal nference of black gay men. Unr the tle In This Our Liv, the event foced on black lbian and gay history, fears and prejudice wh the black muny, spirualy, bisexualy and health issu. Organised by the London Black Lbian and Gay Centre, was held at Hampn Communy Centre north London and was attend by men om across the UK cludg Manchter, Leeds, Leicter and Bristol.
