It’s entirely normal for potential ctomers to quiz a stud about the sorts of thgs, so Webb enurag askg qutns—anythg om quirg about how they sterilize (or even how they tt said sterilizatn machery), to where the jewelry is manufactured. “Fd a stud whose piercers and employe are knowledgeable about the materials they’re g piercgs, where the jewelry is om, what go to makg a high qualy piece of body jewelry, and seem to re about what they’re g,” he says.</p><h2>How Piercgs are Admistered</h2><p>One of the biggt misnceptns people have about ear piercgs is that they are admistered wh some kd of “piercg gun,” Webb says. This method is far outdated and is also far ls accurate than a simple sterilized needle piercg. (“Sterile gze or clean paper towels are suggted, but Q-tips and tton pads are not remend as the tton fibers n get easily ught or wound around the jewelry, and culture bacteria.”)  Lastly, avoid harsh chemils. </p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Revery Time</div><p>Cartilage tak longer to heal than tissue. Webb says that rtilage n take 6-9 months to heal, pared to 1-2 for tissue. Furthermore, a plited puncture like the two-pot dtrial piercg n take up to an entire year or more. “This area is prone to movement and beg slept on,” he explas, addn to the fact that two wounds are healg stead of jt one. Regardls of the piercg, though, any amount of prsure applied—or if somethg tch on —then you need to add healg time. The most important thg: Don't pick at any kd of piercg. Leave alone. Don’t move or twist the jewelry; this n slow down healg tim. </p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Downsize After ~6 Weeks</div><p>For both earlobe and rtilage piercgs, you should plan to downsize the jewelry once ial swellg subsis, roughly after six weeks. You won't need as much metal there after this pot, and the oversized piece n impe healg, irrate the piercg, and maybe even alter the angle of a rtilage piercg. This is an approximatn, Webb says, sce no two people heal at the same rate. So, make a plan to go see your piercer after six weeks to asss. This is when you n also discs troducg different styl of jewelry to earlobe piercgs, and even materials, if the wound is fully healed. Remember this advice above all: “The sk is very absorbent, so ’s important to e qualy materials,” says Webb. “No. Cheap. Metals.”</p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Good Metals for Piercgs</div><p>An addnal sign of a good stud is the metals they e: “Profsnal studs should be g implant-gra tanium, solid gold, and nbium,” Webb says. “All jewelry should be hand polished to a mirror fish. All of the materials have been rigoroly tted for their bpatibily, and is extremely rare to have an allergy to the metals.” Solid gold or implant gra tanium should never dull. But be ut when cleang the wound wh hydrogen peroxi if you are wearg tanium. “Tanium oxi and hydrogen peroxi don’t have a good reactn, and will the polish on the tanium,” he says.</p><div class="AdWrapper-dQtivb fZrssQ ad ad---ntent"><div class="ad__slot ad__slot---ntent" data-no-id="r0v5c"></div></div><p>Webb adds that US-manufactured products are also important to seek out, due to natnal regulatns on the materials. “Overseas, the metal laws are much different, and if you’re gettg tanium or gold that is manufactured overseas, there’s no guarantee that the tanium will be implant gra, or what materials the gold has been harned wh.”</p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Inferr Metals for Piercgs</div><p>As for h piercgs, is important to avoid steel, silver, and pper. (Then aga, try to stick wh the three optns mentned above for your bt luck.) “The materials n nta impuri that n be broken down by your <a href=" target="_blank">body’s pH</a>, and n e a reactn,” Webb warns. The n be OK to e healed piercgs, but proceed wh utn.</p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Non-Metal Materials to Consir and Avoid</div><p>If you prefer non-metal materials, the sole optn for h ear piercgs is glass (eher borosilite or quartz glass). “This would monly be for a larger gge piercg,” Webb explas. “We generally start earlobe piercgs at an 18g, which is a very small gge. For example, most glass jewelry or plugs start at 12g. (The lower the number, the thicker the gge).” Once a lobe wound is healed and stretched (that is, “gged”), there are a variety of acceptable materials one n e.
