Books are years the makg, and was a few years ago that Tom Cardamone, asked whether I'd be terted ntributg an say to a llectn about favoure gay books that were out-of-prt. It seemed somehow obscure to me, gay wrers wrg about books no longer available.
To unter the possibily of the book beg too amic, too oteric, I wrote my say wh a particular tent - I would talk about why the book appealed to me an accsible way, how related to my journey as a gay man and a wrer, and knowg that others may not possibly ever read , monstrate a b of the book's bety (My choice was Patrick Rose's "Birthmarks". )I was amed on readg the fally-published book, a betiful edn by Haid Prs - geo ver and a lic feel to the pag - that this was the approach taken by most ntributors, and that the llectn is not obscure, but an tertg and unique approach to gay history and gay men's liv featurg engagg and lively prose about somethg we love and why we loved .
As much as lerary mer, the books featured this anthology, poted ways for gay men to survive, live and love, gave hope and possibily, and told that we were not was a fascatg social history to disver so many works wh gay ntent wrten at tim wh so much gay opprsn, whether a 1924 novel by Glenway Wttt, or young adult novels om 1969 and 1972. The breadth of the llectn (there are 28 says all) spans a long perd of gay history.

Many of the early books reviewed featured rich, olr gay men wh much younger lovers, livg high society New York or European ci, some volved wh htlers; this was followed by an exploratn of the many novels to e out of the early years of the AIDS epimic. Another major strand is about gay men lookg for and fdg themselv (or who they hoped to be) whether more recent novels featurg black gay characters, awkward gay teenagers, or men facg opprsn, or love, or at play. I found tertg how often ntributors knew the thors of the books they wrote about, as iends and lleagu, or perhaps bee they'd tracked them down as fans: a ment both on how small the gay lerary world is but also how emotnal ti affect how we view art.
At the same time, is a meetg of wrers, who are often the tra of pturg memori and romanticizg the past, and gay sensibily, which often is about wantg to be someone else or wantg to be a better self, or feelg "special" or "different" and turng that uniquens to advantage. Bill Brent quot an unpublished passage by Pl Reed about a man who spends so much time longg for his past that he turned regret to an if this melancholy don't appeal to you, I thk any gay man terted gay inty and history will fd "The Lost Library" engagg, be swept to nversatns about why and how we love men, the moments we knew we were gay, the realizatns that life would be jt fe, and the signposts, the form of books, that showed the way. Not only about books, this anthology has fe wrg , which mak a good tribute to the gay wrers featured.
The ia of gay and lbian people existg was no surprise to me, but the fact that I had iated a same-genr romance a vioMore. Sign Up for The Gay & Lbian Review’s Newsletter!
