GAYLORDS

The headquarters for the Gay Lords Ltle Village was 24th and Whipple and that’s where all started for this group of Gaylords, but this is not the begng of the story of the ALGN necsarily.

The Gay Lords hung out at 24th and Marshall Boulevard out ont of John Spry Elementary School (2400 S Marshall Blvd, Chigo, IL 60623) which is the same tersectn where the legendary 24th and Marshall Boulevard Lat Kgs started, however, they didn’t e along until the mid-1960s and that was maly bee Gay Lords were voluntarily relquishg this rner to serve Vietnam. By the later 50s Gay Lords graduated to Harley Davidson Motorcycl and this ma the girls flock to them; not only that, but the Gay Lords were also nng Harrison High School and the Outlaws were not happy wh any of g more nflict. Gay Lords were fightg wh Vice Lords, Egyptian Cobras and Roman Sats bee they were attendg Harrison High School as they muted om the Near Wt Si neighborhood om the Maxwell Street Market area.

CHIGO GAYLORDS

Gog back to Wt Town 1956, Anthony Anara was now 16 years old and anized the group of now 37 guys to somethg siar to a club, but took until 1958 for them to officially name themselv “Gay Lords, ” Bobby Shipball me up wh the name. As soon as the Gay Lords anizatn began 1958 there were now 90 members makg them one of the bigger outfs the area and the legends began at the tersectn of Huron and Noble which is the motherland of the AGLN Gaylords. The early racial makp of the Gay Lords was mostly whe members that were Polish, German, and Italian and early acunts even say there were Mexin members too (Short & Strodtbeck, 1961).

In the late 1950s, the Wt Town Gaylords began growg larger and beme a major prence at Wells High School (936 N Ashland Ave, Chigo, IL 60622) loted the East Village neighborhood. Gaylords, C-Not, Domos and Lazy Gents were the domatg Italian gangs and the Playboys were started bee they felt the Gaylords, and the other Italian gangs were bullyg them and g trouble their neighborhood. The worst enemi for the Gay Lords up north were Playboys, Sons of Satan Slav (Ventur), Pulaski Park, C-Not, and some small groups of Puerto Rin gangs like the Imperials and Skulls (Later known as Lat Kgs).

It was also the early 1960s that the Gay Lords were a transn wh their name changg om “Gay Lords” to “Gaylords” and their new lors were to be grey and black or light blue and black pendg on the sectn.

Another big change was the emblem that the Gaylords would wear, as the skull wh whiskey bottle etc… was beg replaced by a Celtic cross wh a sunburst which would bee the permanent Gaylords’ symbol (Short & Strodtbeck, 1961). Some of the first Mexin fai were movg to the Ltle Village muny at that time and soon the first Mexin gang started up at this tersectn to fend themselv agast the Gaylords and Outlaws.

The Lat Kgs were massive right om the start, Leavt and Schiller were erng the 24th and Marshall Boulevard Lat Kgs which meant north si Lat Kgs would e and back up the south sirs, this meant more trouble for Gaylords. ” Many Gaylords roved the Humboldt Park Park area and terrorized Puerto Rin gangs and many other Puerto Rin youths that claimed to have been attacked and beaten the park by Gaylords.

Gaylords ed had some jt e bee alongsi the Puerto Rin migratn me many unsirabl to the muni, although mostly not tentnal om the Puerto Rin muny this is jt what tagged along wh the Puerto Rin populace. The Gaylords would eventually feat the Skulls and ph them onto Leavt and Schiller to jo forc wh the Imperials, the marriage of the two along wh other groups brought about the birth of the Lat Kgs 1964; therefore, part of the very reason the Lat Kgs formed is bee of the Gaylords. The Gaylords always had a strong sense of ary pri and now most of them went to serve between 1965 and 1966 and by 1966 24th and Marshall Boulevard was pletely hand over to the Lat Kgs makg that sectn beme stronger than ever whout the Gaylords prent to stop them.

As the Ltle Village chapter closed by 1966, a Gaylord livg at 18th and Wtern the Heart of Chigo neighborhood got nnected wh a gang of Irish kids that hung out at Garfield Boulevard (55th Street) and Halsted at Big Jim’s pool hall.

The 18th and Wtern Gaylords did not yet have that sectn officially tablished but they were livg there, and the guys were nnected om Polk and Miller Gaylords which was the group that closed their doors 1964. The 55th and Ashland sectn veloped a major followg and soon there were whe youths om as far south as southern Marquette Park wantg on the Gaylords, cludg que a few om 67th and Kedzie Marquette Park. Although their north si legacy is the strongt ever told, was the south si that was perhaps larger now pecially as 55th and Ashland kept growg but was the Wt Town Gaylords that were some of the tought greasers ever known up north.

Olr retired rivals n still talk about how they experienced a lot of grief when they had to go agast the Gaylords and when the Gaylords showed up several rs full of guys would show up and beat the crap out of the rivals.

I am not blamg any race of people for this change, but I will say the whe youths began to stggle the muni as they had to al wh sr of gangs, this is when they turned to gangs like the Gaylords for protectn. There were many Hispanic fai livg Gaylord neighborhoods that were treated wh great rpect and even some of the origal Gaylords om Wt Town where Mexin and many more Mexins and even Puerto Rins joed the Gaylords over the years.

In Belmont – Crag Gaylords explod size as they settled Beln & Lavergn (Blackhawk Park), Cicero & Wrightwood, Gee & McVicker (Mary Lyon School) Beln & Major, Fullerton & Monor, and At & Diversey.

In 1969 Altgeld & Avers, Altgeld & Lawndale (LA Gaylords), Moffat & Campbell, Palmer and Sacramento, Ridgeway & Fullerton, Diversey & Avers, Diversey & Rockwell all opened the same year. Neighborhoods were changg rapidly om whe to Hispanic or whe to black and the Gaylords’ ma goal was to slow this down, many claim they were succsful slowg down migratn pecially the 1970s and 1980s.

This set was a rult of a gang lled the Maniac Drifters fadg out the area and younger members were still lookg to stay active a gang, so they joed forc wh the Palmer Gaylords and beme the Wnemac Park Gaylords.

Once aga another neighborhood was changg and whe flight was for the privileged that had the money to do so, while the impoverished whe youths and var Hispanics and blacks that had lived their whole liv there had to watch their neighborhood change and outsi gangs like the Lat Kgs me to va, this is when the Gaylords me to rec the hard trodn youths of Albany Park to their club. It all started April of 1975 when Lat Kgs murred the lear of the Simon Cy Royals “Bimbo” who kept WPO and Royal/Gaylord relatns real tight and kept both gangs om gog to war, as soon as Bimbo was taken out, the Royals advanced on Kilbourn Park and led a Gaylord out back by the tracks and shot him executn style, this started a major war between Royals and Gaylords 1975. The Gaylords gunned down the lear of the Insane Pop, Larry “Lark” Morris April of 1975 that brought them to war wh the Pop as well, now the WPO was fished and the scene of seeg all Stone Greasers hangg out together at Lenny’s rtrant (4 Buddi Rtrant) as C-Not, Gaylords, PVP/PVR, Bel Airs, Insane Pop, Chi Wt and Simon Cy Royals ed to all hang at this der together between 1971 and 1975, now that was over wh.

The Gaylords then ma to the North Center neighborhood at Berta and Leavt, Column and Campbell and Berte and Milwkee which is what set off a fire cracker of a gang war between Gaylords and Insane Dc.
