GAY VILLAGE - CAPE TOWN CENTRAL FOM

My ISP works to illumate the diversy of LGBTQI experienc and liv Cape Town. I do this through discsg the privilege necsary to "e out" Cape Town and, subsequently, have accs to The Pk Village, Cape Town's gay district. By Brgg theory on "g out" as a whe experience and the queer movement as re-centerg whe normativy, I work to openly discs how a history of excln has lived on Cape Town's gay district and phed the more margalized gay muni out of the cy center. Through amic rearch, participant observatn both the gay village and the townships, and five rmal terviews wh South Ains who intify as LGBTQI, I work to reveal how queer spac are both plac of cln and excln on the basis of race, relign, genr inty, etc. My ncln is that whe gay men, unlike black or loured queer South Ains (pecially lbians), are able to utilize pre-existg racist and misogynistic stctur to ga greater accs and acceptance Cape Town. Subsequently, queer intified black or loured South Ains, pecially women, are ma more margalized by the spac and muni that are supposed to accept them. This is largely a rult of a long history of apartheid South Ai that has left the untry wh many qutns and issu surroundg equal rights, accs, and ()visibily Cape Town's cy center. * gay village cape town *

Empiril observatns of the six remag gay leisure space owners De Waterkant (populatn) are taken to acunt by g semi-stctured terviews. All narrativ are analysed – qualative data analysis software – to intify applible factors, which participants believe are ntributg to the “-gayg” of Cape Town’s gay village. From the nducted analys, be apparent that Wtern theorisatn of the “-gayg” of gay villag is not universally applible as certa factors ntributg to De Waterkant’s mise appear to be lotn-specific, suggtg that Wtern theory is sufficient to expla gay spatial reali non-Wtern ntexts such as South Ai.

The intified factors rponsible for the “-gayg” of De Waterkant adversely affect Cape Town’s stat as a gay pal and s abily to market this gay neighbourhood to attract the gay tourism market. This may rult lost soc-enomic opportuni nsirg the fancial ntributn of gay travellers to the lol tourist enomy.

Dpe a new liberal nstutnal environment, the gay spac generated post-apartheid De Waterkant are not clive of most gay South Ains.

As a nsequence, De Waterkant’s potential to functn as a se of inty formatn, velopment and re-affirmatn, seen many gay villag found other Wtern societi, appears unlikely. The paper vtigat the evolvg gay geographi of De Waterkant, Cape Town’s “gay village”, s subsequent impact on the urban form and possible role future gay inty formatn.

In dog so is monstrated that the materialy of apartheid imbalanc not only unrpned the generatn of an exclnary Whe gay male enclave De Waterkant but that this legacy perpetuat the historic excln of other gay persons: lbians, Black people and the poor alike.
