<em>them</em>. “We were not only hearg this om the fans, but noticg our own liv as well.”</p><p>Flackett says that over the last few years, the show’s creators have been watchg their own children start middle and high school, and noticg “more trans boys and girls enter their liv” as they do. Increasgly, the world of <em>Big Mouth</em> felt plete whout transgenr reprentatn. But the producers did their homework first.</p><p>“Natalie was born out of talkg to a number of trans kids,” says Flackett.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>Natalie was also wrten part by edian <a href=">Patti Harrison</a>, who joed the <em>Big Mouth</em> wrg team for season four. Harrison “helped brg a lot of thenticy to Natalie’s voice,” Flackett says. And notably, the show’s producers reached out to Totah, a transgenr actrs, to voice the part.</p><p>The producers, Totah says, were “super sympathetic, passnate, and open to hearg thgs om me” after she was st as Natalie.</p><p>“I thk one of the first thgs they said is, ‘If anythg don’t feel right or if you want to say somethg a different way or if don’t look like you or a trans person thentilly, please speak up, please tell ,’” Totah rells.</p><p>Once or twice, she remembers makg a suggtn and the producers told her, “Done, let’s do ,” whout hatn.</p><p>“I thk when you talk about allyship, really should be centerg people who do their rearch and do their due diligence, but who are also passnate,” says Totah. “And I thk we were both humbled by this experience.”</p><p>For Totah, Natalie isn’t jt a character but a remr to be her own person. In one of the funnit scen her three-episo arc, Natlie rists the other mpers’ attempts to drs her up like <a href=">Hari Nef</a> and Calyn Jenner. They want Natalie to look and behave like famo transgenr people they’ve seen on social media.</p><p>“No, stop !” Natalie pleads. “Stop drsg me up!”</p><p>Totah, who me out when she was 17, knows well the prsure of beg expected to drs, look, and sound a certa way, not jt public but Hollywood. But she’s even more thrilled at the thought of viewers like the stoners om her dorm meetg a nuanced transgenr character on a rnchy rtoon show.</p><p>“I jt thk ’s so excg that we n do a way that reach an dience that might not have seen this reprentatn if was on a different show,” she says. “It’s super ol that we n make a show that reach all those guys at my llege.
