This wasn’t jt “Gay-A, ” or how some of refer to meetgs for people—mostly whe cis men—who intify as gay.

I never experienced outright bigotry or homophobia; what I experienced was more sid and subtle—I felt as if I was expected to check my queer inty at the ltle by ltle, queer people are rvg out our own spac and adaptg the nearly 100-year-old program for our own e. In fact, a full 25 percent of gay and transgenr people abe alhol, pared to jt five to 10 percent of the total populatn. For some LGBT clients, this will clu addrsg the effects of ternalized homophobia.

Another LGBT dividual said of the procs that led him to a gay group, “I refed to go to the gay groups bee I did not want to be intified as a homosexual. Bee of this, and not beg able to let anyone really know me AA (as this would mean sayg I was gay), I did not make any real progrs my first six months AA. “I fally went to a gay group and a man me over and talked to me after the meetg.
