You should be dog both, bee you're gog to have people om the muny workg or at least tryg to get jobs at your agency.”</p><h2 class="">‘That’s not equal protectn of the law’</h2><p class="">Haton alleged that the psychologist who did his evaluatn asked him qutns like, “What were the nam of your doctors that performed your surgery? How do your fay feel about you beg transgenr? How do your wife feel about you beg transgenr?”</p><p class="">“I felt like was kd of weird bee ... don't perta to the duti of beg a police officer at all,” Haton said. The person he terviewed wh “was thrilled” and said he’d ll him back that Monday, Patrick Callahan relled.</p><p class="">“Well, the phone ll never me,” he said. “So Tuday I gave him a ll. He wouldn't take my ll. His iend told him was “a joke around the partment, that some ‘ thg’ wanted to work there.”</p><div class="ad ad--text-alignment ad-ntaer boxleAd dn-prt" data-ttid="ad__ntaer"><div data-mps="te" data-slot="boxle" data-siz="[[[1000,1],[]],[[758,1],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[728,90],[360,360]]],[[0,0],[[300,250],[700,50],[5,5],[360,360]]]]" data-renr-on-view="te" data-targetg="{}" data-active-tab="te" data-offset-viewport="100" data-ttid="ad__ntaer__ner"></div></div><p class="">Officer Kathryn Wters, the LGBTQ liaison at the San Francis Police Department, spects she was the victim of a siar stance of anti-trans employment discrimatn, though she was never able to nfirm this.</p><p class="">In 2014, she applied to the Denton Police Department Texas and took s wrten exam.</p><p class="">“I thk I sred like the top five on the wrten exam,” she said, notg that the sr are posted publicly. “And then a uple weeks later, [I] received a letter om the Denton Police Department statg that my ary discharge form, my DD 214, wasn't my background packet. And for that reason, I was beg pletely disqualified for further nsiratn.”</p><p class="">She said she and her wife both double- and triple-checked to make sure everythg was clud the applitn packet, cludg the DD Form 214, prr to s submissn. She said “there's nothg specific to dite” that she was rejected bee she’s trans, but she believ someone may have removed the form om her packet “and that was the reason they gave for not ntug wh my nsiratn.”</p><p class="">A requt for ment om the Denton Police Department has not been returned.</p><p class="">There have also been other high-profile s of alleged anti-trans discrimatn by law enforcement agenci. In 2012, Mia Macy, reprented by the Transgenr Law Center, <a href=" target="_blank">succsfully sued the Bure of Alhol, Tobac, Firearms and Explosiv</a> after the agency offered her a job as a ballistics technician and then rcd the job offer after she told them she was trans.</p><h2 class="">Clicians ‘may lack the petency’</h2><p class="">As lawsus slowly accumulate and more people transn on the job, the culture wh agenci is slowly changg, Julie Callahan said. Throughout s existence, TCOPS has seen more than 500 officers transn, she add. Agenci bigger ci are more likely to have better polici, Julie Callahan said, meang more nservative or ral areas might lack basic rmatn about trans people, which n affect whether they’ll hire them at all.</p><p class="">There also aren’t clear, nsistent standards across the untry for how clicians nduct psychologil evaluatns for law enforcement. Michael Roberts and Ryan Roberts, -owners of Law Enforcement Psychologil Servic Inc., have evaluated many LGBTQ law enforcement applints San Francis. They said the guidance, regulatns and required ntug tn for clicians who nduct evaluatns differs by state. California is among the most well-regulated stat, they said.</p><p class="">“Police and public safety psychologil asssment is a ponent of a specialty practice as regnized by the APA,” Michael Roberts said, referrg to the Amerin Psychologil Associatn, “so this isn't somethg that any clician should be dog whout trag specific to this.”</p><p class="">There are laws terwoven to the procs of dog psychologil asssments for law enforcement ndidat, such as the Amerins Wh Disabili Act, which someone uld “n afoul of” while evaluatg a trans ndidate’s medil rerds, for example, he said.</p><p class="">“It is the se that people are out there — they're probably not dog rrectly. They may be dog whout specialized trag, which they shouldn't be dog. More than one-fifth (22 percent) of trans people who had teracted wh police reported police harassment, and 6 percent of trans dividuals reported they experienced bias-motivated asslt by officers. Those rat were higher for Black transgenr people: 38 percent reported that they faced biased harassment, and 15 percent reported asslt motivated by bias.</p><p class="">Patrick Callahan said most LGBTQ rights groups see trans officers as the “enemy,” and they “don’t speak to at all,” even though trans officers face the same discrimatn and harassment as trans people other fields.</p><p class="">“They shut out tomatilly, bee we've crossed a le somewhere,” he said. “We are not trans enough anymore. We are not LGBTQ enough anymore … and we get the same om people wh the law enforcement muny. Right now, we're an untenable posn as transgenr ps. But Haton said the experience hasn’t affected his goals.</p><p class="">“I still want to work law enforcement,” he said. “At the begng, I'm not gog to lie, I was super, super disappoted, pecially disappoted wh NOPD.
