At a Royal Air Force Ball the summer of 1920 he danced wh Lady Elizabeth Bow-Lyon, a dghter of Sttish nobily who had jt been prented at urt. Albert later said that he fell love that night, but Elizabeth apparently did not feel the same. She had plenty of admirers, and his bgraphy of her, <em>The Queen Mother,</em> Shawcross not that she had turned down multiple proposals of marriage. She was wily nsired to be betiful, had a trendy haircut, filled her letters wh wty remarks, and acrdg to bgrapher <strong>Denis Judd,</strong> she was known for throwg “magil” shootg weekends at her fay’s tate, Glamis. When Albert ma his first proposal Febary 1921, she gently said that she wanted to rema iends.</p><p class="paywall">Due part to the approval of his mother, Queen Mary, Albert ntued to pursue Elizabeth for the next few years. He proposed two more tim and she fally accepted 1923. <a href=">Acrdg to her mother</a>, Lady Strathmore, she hated bee she was “torn between her longg to make Bertie happy and her reluctance to take on the big rponsibili which this marriage mt brg.” At the time, she was simply aaid of beg public life as a member of the royal fay—she uldn’t have anticipated that she would someday be the Queen Mother, the ultimate symbol of Brish longevy and stabily.</p><p class="paywall">For the last few weeks, the queen has been at Sandrgham to <a href=">observe</a> the 70th anniversary of her father’s ath and the begng of her reign on Febary 6.
