BELOVED GAY FILM “BIG EN” TURNS 20 YEARS OLD

I would like to shake director Thomas Bezucha's hand and thank him for the kd of film I have been wag for for years: a film which gay men were reprented all shap and siz, where they actually were OVER the age of 30, and where they were jt regular guys! One reviewer was offend by the stg of a Native Amerin Big En, well I say KUDOS to to stg Eric Schweig -- I personally know gay Native Amerins and as that sayg go, "we are everywhere" and you n't ny that certa rac or natnali have gays and lbians them.

In a time where too much foc is on lipstick lbians and how you n jt work a movie around that, 's so wonrful to have a film like Big En fy all the typil clich and dare to give a rather wholome, healthy portrayal of gays -- one which we do value our fai and their support, and have other valu stead of what people seem to thk 's like om watchg Queer As Folk. A lovely movie, is hard to put to words the exact effect this film had on En may be a fictnal town populated by fictnal characters, but is a place I long to live gay men are brought together by the help of the townsfolk. A lovely cross between Meg Ryan-Tom Hanks fluff and "Northern Exposure" quirks, "Big En" sists on keepg merry and rmal, nfint knowg that s sual, natural stance on the whole gay element actually giv universal Gross fills for Meg here as Henry Hart, a former cizen of "Big En" who many years ago moved to the Big Cy to 'be himself'.

Thgs may end up a b too tidy and neat, but, aga, the bety of the piece is s "gay is normal" approach and almost 60s-like performanc are nothg spectacular to wre home about, but neverthels que wng and thoroughly entertag. Schweig, lookg like he belongs a productn of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nt" stead of a gay love story, overplays the unbearably shy, tensely quiet type at first, but eventually relax to his role as he begs to make his feelgs mirthful supportg st is ltered wh h tak on old stereotyp, none more so than the wonrful Nan ("Goodbye Columb") Mart as the brazenly tsive Widow Thayer, whose bold, Yenta-styled matchmakg methods are never ls than lightful.

This cross-cultural relatnship mak all the more imprsive bee to be gay is like to be an Indian a small muny, or as for that a big one: is difficult to assume bee is a mory suatn but has to be accepted by the ncerned people first of all.

It isn't as agenda-driven as many of the gay films beg ma the days; was first and foremost a betiful story about acceptg yourself as an adult, navigatg plited fay relatnships, and fdg/nurturg/acceptg relatnships that are good for you rather than chasg after potls fantasi of romance. Perhaps is unrealistic that a whole town is acceptg of homosexualy, let alone a ral town Montana, but is nice to dream sometim that, someday, we will see somethg like that real life, albe not now. Bon pots to betiful scenery, romance, good dialogue, great actg and small-town atmosphere that mak you believe you are Note: Nice to see a gay-romantic movie produced 2000 that don't volve nudy, vlence, sex, language or AIDS-related subplots.
