But 's mostly elaborate, credible theori that are pletely wrong. And that's really fun. I'm exced for people to see how wrong they are.<br /></p><h2 data-no-id="19" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">Both of you mentned the podst's first episo not wantg to see queer character stori that end tragedy. The <em>Yellowjackets</em> story is herently tragic, but Van and Taissa’s relatnship is played very supportively and romantilly. No spoilers, but do you feel anx about what might happen to them?</h2><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>JSB:</strong> Certaly. Certaly I do. Bee everythg that n go wrong the world of <em>Yellowjackets</em> will go wrong. So, y, I do have anxiety there. But I don't have anxiety about how the show will handle the relatnship terms of queerns ’e they've already proven that they unrstand what not to do. The fact that Van didn't die—when I fished episo seven and I thought we had a “<a href=" target="_blank" data-vars-ga-outbound-lk=" data-vars-ga-ux-element="Hyperlk" data-vars-ga-ll-to-actn="kill your gays" class="body-lk css-1mt1pvh et3p2gv0">kill your gays</a>” moment, I was so pissed. That's jt fun for to do as actors, but I thk also mak the show really tertg om a genre perspective. That 's shockg, but also very funny, but also very tragic and horrible at the same time. And like, tly, the suatn will not improve for the girls. And everybody knows that gog and 's only gog to get worse for everybody. But we're still able to explore the relatnships a very ground and sweet and fully realized way amongst how miserable their suatn is and that's somethg I like about the show a lot. </p><h2 data-no-id="23" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">Did you know your character lived after the wolf attack?</h2><p data-no-id="24" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>LH:</strong> Well, they don't tell anythg advance. So I didn't know that was gonna happen. When the wrers told Jane [Widdop] that Lra Lee was gog to die, they took Jane out to lunch a few episos advance before that happened. And we got the script for episo seven, and I hadn't been taken out to lunch. So I was like, “Okay, if I'm dyg they better take me out to lunch! Otherwise this is bullsh!” But they lled me. Tly, we got the scripts and like not even a uple of hours later [<em>Yellowjackets</em> creators] Ashley [Lyle] and Bart [Nickerson] lled me and were like, “So you're not dyg, so 's fe, you live to play another day, but this is a permanent jury.” And I was like, “Yeah, looks like , for sure.” I knew fairly quickly that Van would survive, which was nice.</p><h2 data-no-id="25" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">So you thk they would have been open to your put if that had been the plan?</h2><p data-no-id="26" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>JSB:</strong> One hundred percent. I'm very fortunate to be at a moment my reer right now where all of the characters that I'm playg are queer. And I'm gettg to play a lot of queer girls of lor. Yeah, 's really special to get to brg my whole self to a role. Especially when I'm ved to llaborate on that role. That's happened on both <em>Yellowjackets </em>and <em>Scream</em>, where they want our feedback and want to be breathg the characters. I don't know if that's rare or if 's new, to be ved to participate so fully creatg a role and embodyg . And I hope that I get to do more and more and more.</p><h2 data-no-id="30" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">Do you thk 's important for queer characters to be played by queer people?</h2><p data-no-id="31" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>LH:</strong> From a personal standpot, I thk 's lovely. I wouldn't say that I thk 's sential. For me, the thgs that I am always thkg about the most wh queer storytellg is: Who's wrg ? Who's directg ? Who's producg ? Bee those are the people who have foundatnal ntrol over how the story go. That's where the story is really ma. Actors are the face, but we're jt a ltle piece of a big pie. And part of the issue is that for so long and kd of on an ongog basis, out queer actors will get passed over to play straight rol as well. Bee 's like, “Oh well, we don't know if you n rry a project, we don't know if people n believe that.” That's why a lot of people have historilly stayed closeted this dtry. I thk part of the problem is [we need to] hire queer actors more, perd, right? The more queer stori that are beg wrten and the more queer creators that are volved, maybe 's like not as much of a albreaker if a straight person plays a queer person. Nonbary characters are often portrayed on film and TV as very androgyno figur; there's not a lot of variety how that inty is reprented.</h2><p data-no-id="36" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>LH:</strong> Yeah, I'd like to see more, and I'd like to be volved that. That's somethg that exc me about the future, is hopefully that happeng more, and hopefully beg able to do more of that. We'll see! Both queer women of lor. Natalie is a brilliant actrs and director, Janelle Monáe is both an actor and mician. I thk they both produce. But 's mostly elaborate, credible theori that are pletely wrong. And that's really fun. The <em>Yellowjackets</em> story is herently tragic, but Van and Taissa’s relatnship is played very supportively and romantilly. No spoilers, but do you feel anx about what might happen to them?</h2><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>JSB:</strong> Certaly. Certaly I do. Bee everythg that n go wrong the world of <em>Yellowjackets</em> will go wrong. So, y, I do have anxiety there. But I don't have anxiety about how the show will handle the relatnship terms of queerns ’e they've already proven that they unrstand what not to do. The fact that Van didn't die—when I fished episo seven and I thought we had a “<a href=" target="_blank" data-vars-ga-outbound-lk=" data-vars-ga-ux-element="Hyperlk" data-vars-ga-ll-to-actn="kill your gays" class="body-lk css-1mt1pvh et3p2gv0">kill your gays</a>” moment, I was so pissed. I like, lled the producers and was like, mad. And they were like, “No, no, no, no, no, she's not ad,” and I was like, “Oh! Okay, then we're fe. And like, tly, the suatn will not improve for the girls. And everybody knows that gog and 's only gog to get worse for everybody. But we're still able to explore the relatnships a very ground and sweet and fully realized way amongst how miserable their suatn is and that's somethg I like about the show a lot. </p><h2 data-no-id="23" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">Did you know your character lived after the wolf attack?</h2><p data-no-id="24" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>LH:</strong> Well, they don't tell anythg advance. So I didn't know that was gonna happen. When the wrers told Jane [Widdop] that Lra Lee was gog to die, they took Jane out to lunch a few episos advance before that happened. And we got the script for episo seven, and I hadn't been taken out to lunch. So I was like, “Okay, if I'm dyg they better take me out to lunch! Otherwise this is bullsh!” But they lled me. Tly, we got the scripts and like not even a uple of hours later [<em>Yellowjackets</em> creators] Ashley [Lyle] and Bart [Nickerson] lled me and were like, “So you're not dyg, so 's fe, you live to play another day, but this is a permanent jury.” And I was like, “Yeah, looks like , for sure.” I knew fairly quickly that Van would survive, which was nice.</p><h2 data-no-id="25" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">So you thk they would have been open to your put if that had been the plan?</h2><p data-no-id="26" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>JSB:</strong> One hundred percent. I was ready to fight. Bee I'm not gonna participate that personally. There's too much of that the world. I'm very fortunate to be at a moment my reer right now where all of the characters that I'm playg are queer. And I'm gettg to play a lot of queer girls of lor. Yeah, 's really special to get to brg my whole self to a role. Especially when I'm ved to llaborate on that role. That's happened on both <em>Yellowjackets </em>and <em>Scream</em>, where they want our feedback and want to be breathg the characters. I don't know if that's rare or if 's new, to be ved to participate so fully creatg a role and embodyg . And I hope that I get to do more and more and more.</p><h2 data-no-id="30" class="body-h3 css-db6t61 et3p2gv0">Do you thk 's important for queer characters to be played by queer people?</h2><p data-no-id="31" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><strong>LH:</strong> From a personal standpot, I thk 's lovely. I wouldn't say that I thk 's sential. For me, the thgs that I am always thkg about the most wh queer storytellg is: Who's wrg ? Who's directg ? Who's producg ? Bee those are the people who have foundatnal ntrol over how the story go. That's where the story is really ma. Actors are the face, but we're jt a ltle piece of a big pie. And part of the issue is that for so long and kd of on an ongog basis, out queer actors will get passed over to play straight rol as well. Bee 's like, “Oh well, we don't know if you n rry a project, we don't know if people n believe that.” That's why a lot of people have historilly stayed closeted this dtry. I thk part of the problem is [we need to] hire queer actors more, perd, right? The more queer stori that are beg wrten and the more queer creators that are volved, maybe 's like not as much of a albreaker if a straight person plays a queer person.
