People would stop him and half-jokgly ask for him to take their picture, and he’d always oblige, he said.</p><p>On McCoy’s way home om work, he’d stop as his father’s hoe, which had a darkroom the basement that McCoy would e to velop the photos, he said. The next day, he’d return them to his subjects, and the cycle ntued.</p><p>McCoy’s photos were a h at the Rialto Tap, a now-funct gay bar the South Loop that attracted all kds of men, om Downtown profsnals to drag queens, gangsters and unhoed people, he said. </p><p>“Once people the Rialto saw I was always gog to take their picture and, a day or so, I’d be able to give to them, they jt went wild,” McCoy said. “I beme the photographer for the place.”</p><p>McCoy’s gallery shows those imag, ptured durg a ccial 10-year perd the ’80s before any of his subjects were aware of the tragedy to e wh the HIV/AIDS epimic.</p><p>“I got kd of teary-eyed seeg the photos the exhibn,” McCoy said durg a preview Thursday. “Some of the people have gone, and they were close to me. And to see most of them go at a young age and regnize today they didn’t have to. If the work had been done to al wh HIV and AIDS 10+ years earlier, they would be alive.”</p><p>McCoy talked about his subjects by their nam, sharg memori and their backstori.</p><p>One of “the Youngbloods,” for example, would pivot om a “straight as an arrow, mascule-prentg” man to a “total drama queen” the send he entered the bar, McCoy said.</p><p>Or the Rialto worker who had spent s jail and worked as the bar’s bouncer when he got out, McCoy said.</p><p>“So many stori,” McCoy said.</p><p>McCoy never stcted his subjects on how to pose, givg the imag a more ndid feel and givg the people agency over how they were portrayed, he said.</p><p>“I wanted them to jt be themselv,” McCoy said. “In that, I hope people take away the bety of Black men. In our natural state, we are very betiful people.”</p><p>Wrightwood 659 will host an eveng wh McCoy 5:30-8:30 p.m. May 4.
