It was 1984, and my girliend and I had been livg together for a uple of years. We had scend the sixty-odd blocks to see Tom Stoppard’s “The Real Thg,” at the Plymouth Theatre. “He lov me,” Glenn Close said onstage. “He wants to punish me wh his pa, but I n’t e up wh the proper guilt. It’s so tirg and so untertg. You never wre about that, you lot.”</p><p class="paywall">“What?” Jeremy Irons said.</p><p class="paywall">“Gallons of k and of typewrer ribbon expend on the misery of the unrequed lover!” Close replied. “Not a word about the utter tedium of the unrequg.”</p><p class="paywall">A year later, I was stg on a uch wh a half-Irish wrer named Jean, listeng to “Pictur at an Exhibn,” a piano piece by Most Mssky. Durg a movement lled “The Catabs,” the mic grew dark. I looked over at Jean, and she looked at me, and at that moment we me to an unspoken agreement about all the trouble we were about to e. In the weeks to e, I would take re to wash my sheets. Jean had two ts, and my girliend—who I’ll ll Rachel, and who remembers none of this, not even the play—was allergic. I knew Rachel would realize somethg was up the first time that she sneezed.</p><p class="paywall">I had grown up believg the transformative power of love. My parents’ marriage had been like that: selfls, givg, ial. They were like the Quaker versn of Morticia and Gomez Addams. As a closeted transgenr child, I had hoped that a siar love might fall upon me, and, so dog, cure me of the unfathomable sire that had domated my heart sce I was five or six. At night, I had two prayers. Charlie Brown lov the Ltle Red Haired Girl, whom we never see. Charlie Brown’s ltle sister Sally is love wh L (“Isn’t he jt the cutt thg?”), whose affectns, turn, are rerved for his blanket. Lucy is love wh Schroer, but Schroer is love wh Beethoven. Marcie is love wh Charlie Brown, and wh Peppermt Patty, but Peppermt Patty lov only Charlie Brown. And so on.</p><p class="paywall">As a boy, I was a goofball. I did imatns, some of them so good that I uld pass for other people on the telephone. I vented satiril songs, which I performed on the piano or sang a pella my unexpected soprano. I ma fake beards out of socks. I buried treasure the yard and drew maps for my sister to fd . My primary form of self-re was the nstant generatn of blarney. I was entertag bee I was sad.</p><p class="paywall">It was readg “Peanuts,” lyg on the floor beneath the piano our suburban home, that I first grasped the terrible tth: my parents rid a rtoon universe. It was Charlie Brown and his iends—children who lived a world fed by unrequed love—who rid the real one. I uld image Charlie askg, wh his ual anguish, “Isn’t there anyone who n tell me what love is all about?”</p><p class="paywall">As turns out, there was one person who uld: Pigpen. Of all the characters “Peanuts,” Pigpen seems most at peace wh the life he has been given. Sure, he’s immersed filth—he n “raise a cloud of dt a snowstorm,” as Charlie Brown puts —and Patty and Vlet seek nstantly to huiate him. But Pigpen will have none of . “Aren’t you ashamed?” Vlet says to him, after makg him look the mirror. “On the ntrary,” he repli. “I didn’t thk I looked this good.” In a strip om September, 1954, Patty march along wh a bucket, termed to “personally give Pigpen a good scbbg.” But when she fds him—stg, as ual, a sandbox—he looks clean and shy. As she parts (“I gus there’s some hope for him, after all”) you see that only half of Pigpen is clean. The si facg away om Patty is still vered wh grime.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">Charl Schulz was said to have grown tired of the character later years, part bee was hard to wre material for him outsi of the one basic joke. But ’s not hard to unrstand his endurg appeal. He’s the clost thg the strip has to the spir of total Zen. It would be nice, I thought, lyg there beneath the piano, to live one’s life like this. It gave me “Peanuts” envy. I wonred: Did Pigpen never feel the yearng to be clean? Or had he accepted that pury was not the rds? I pictured myself knockg on her door <em>en femme,</em> her startled exprsn as she realized that the strange woman before her was someone she already knew. I imaged her rponse: <em>Aren’t you ashamed of yourself?</em> Surely she’d want to give me a good scbbg.</p><p class="paywall"><em>On the ntrary,</em> I might reply. <em>I didn’t thk I looked this good</em>.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">If Pigpen was an emblem of self-acceptance, an even better example was Peppermt Patty. She and her iend Marcie attend a different school than Charlie Brown, on the other si of town. Unlike the girls at Charlie Brown’s school, who wear drs, Peppermt Patty wears shirts and pants or shorts. And she’s an athlete—virtually every time she plays Charlie Brown’s team baseball, she ws.</p><p class="paywall">Given her very clear differenc om other girls, pl her terrible gras, pl a difficult home suatn (her mother is absent, for unclear reasons), you’d thk that Peppermt Patty would stggle—that, like Charlie Brown, she’d fd herself regular need of Lucy van Pelt’s Psychiatric Help. But Patty is almost always sg, upbeat. She is, other than Pigpen (and maybe Snoopy), the most nsistently optimistic member of the st.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p class="paywall">Part of her attu may be the rult of her strange oblivns to the world around her. Patty believ all sorts of thgs that appear unte: for years, she believed that Snoopy was not a dog but “that funny-lookg kid wh the big nose.” She believed that Snoopy’s dog hoe was “Chuck’s gut ttage.” She believed that a school for “gifted children” meant a school that she’d receive a gift for attendg; another time, she attend an obedience-trag school for dogs.</p><p class="paywall">In this obliv self-sufficiency, she rembl no one so much as the solary Pigpen—although, unlike him, she has a sikick, Marcie, whose love for her is unndnal. Marcie is a strange character, some ways. She’s a good stunt, unlike the object of her affectn. She lls Patty “sir,” which might be an honorific, or might be somethg else. My gus is that Marcie, who looks through glass that make her actual ey visible, se somethg Peppermt Patty that no one else n see. Later, Charlie Brown and Pigpen discs Patty. “Patricia is an unual girl,” Pig says. “Did you know she never once cricized my appearance?”</p><p class="paywall">Patty, for her part, lls up Marcie the middle of the night. “Hi Marcie! It’s me! I know ’s three o’clock the morng, but I n’t sleep. You know why I n’t sleep? <em class="small">I’M IN LOVE</em>!” The last panel of this sequence shows Marcie flattened on the floor, her face sad and exhsted. “I’m sure you’ll be very happy, sir,” she says.
