I'd have really liked this my Nifty, Leroti and Gay Authors readg days.

However Mchell was a very pellg narrator and there was alot of cent social mentary here about what means not only to be a black man, but a black gay man Ameri. This was the first book I read where the characters were black and gay and out of closet and they were teractg wh other black gay folks.

It's sni ments about how the "queens" behave the club or the narrative voice sayg that straight people foc on the "eaks like drag-queens and transsexuals" but if your ear is attune to the prence of the ias they will rankle always wh lerature, there is the possibily that the wrer is g a character whose thoughts are different om their own to explore a different iology so I searched for Hardy's own thoughts on genred polics the queer male muny and found an article he did at the time of the books publishg where he said "people are much more fortable wh imag of black gay men that portray as limp-wristed, vogueg, drag queens". As a black gay male this has to be the bt adult lerature book I have ever read. I wasn't faiar wh Hardy's work, but after readg an article that talked about how Jsie Smollett was directg and producg an LGBT film based on this book, I felt the urge to read, I was really pleased by the fact that this was a gay romance wh Black characters wrten by a Black gay man, which was huge pecially nsirg this was published the 90s.

Black gays are typilly portrayed as two thgs: ted/feme or thuggish/mascule/unted. I jt remember vourg this book a matter of days, nsumed by the fact that the gay characters this book were jt like me. Great for the mere fact that shows another si to gay life, one other than mastream and whe.

Wh B-Boy Blu, Jam Earl Hardy has created a piece of lerature that ptur, such a distct narrative voice, as many aspects of gay black culture as seem possible to clu one novel. The novel often feels as if Hardy is ught between two goals: 1) documentg both the bat and cultural vernacular that make up the Ain-Amerin gay experience and 2) entertag the gay black rear.

But even wh s flaws (and there are MANY), the book was groundbreakg at the time of publitn 1994, a cultural touchstone for a generatn of black gay men (or youths my se) who need to see themselv affirmed by this book, and also to rensir Joseph Beam's dictum that "black men lovg black men is the revolutnary act of the 1980s, " sistg that this sentiment shouldn't persist to perpetuy, that the act of black men lovg black men is a relatnship that shouldn't need to be alicized as revolutnary, but perhaps jt ordarily 2, 2011For the time was wrten, one would barely be able to fd a book that scrib a ep love not jt romance, but as is nnected wh passnate dancg.
