” Howard Cse (who sadly passed away 2019) was arguably the backbone of the Gay Comix. It was the first stance which he had openly addrsed his own sexualy his work, and led him to create the acclaimed strip Wenl (for gay publitn The Advote), which told the story of a gay man and his partner Ollie. It also gave him a platform to addrs many subjects which directly affected his muny, cludg AIDS, gay rights monstratns and gay bashg.

For many, Gay Comix beme not only a source of entertament, but a place where you uld fd val rmatn about gay life the ‘80s. After five years of prtg, Denis found that the st of producg Gay Comix was disproportnately higher than any of the other tl that he published, part due to the plex distributn system and distct mailg vic that were entirely separate om the other ics unr the Kchen Sk Prs umbrella. “It was also difficult, if not impossible, to stretch my limed advertisg budget to effectively promote Gay Comix to s primary rear base when everythg else I published uld be efficiently promoted and phed via the ics dtry’s ‘Direct Market’ system, ” he says.

“I creasgly felt that Gay Comix would bt benef om beg wh a gay publisher who knew that specialty market far better. “I nnected wh Bob Ross, who owned the Bay Area Reporter which was a weekly gay paper San Francis, and when he exprsed tert acquirg the tle 1984 seemed like a good match.
