He wears his shock of dark hair swept over his forehead, like a middle-school heartthrob. He has a sprgy walk, a peppy, engaged stage prence—“panrg and solico,” his own words—and a Muppet-ish physily, wh emphatic jellyfish hands that he lik to flop and flail, and big ey that pop wi astonishment or narrow nspiratorial outrage when a beat needs holdg. In the show “Jt for Us” (directed by Adam Brace and produced by Mike Birbiglia), which Elman is performg at the SoHo Playhoe after a buzzy, sold-out n earlier this year at the Cherry Lane, he wears priste whe sneakers, snug black jeans, and a shirt buttoned all the way up to s pot llar. Image, the performer’s armor, is a fascatg thg edy, om Jerry Sefeld’s ti and blazers to Ali Wong’s workg fantastilly filthy sktight leopard prt. When the membrane between person and persona n seem paper-th, what do you want your dience to assume about you, or not? Elman prents as a clean-cut people-pleaser, a grown man eager to prove to the world, as he says his act, that he’s “a good boy”—a moral aspiratn that he explor to shrewd effect the urse of a tremendoly entertag seventy-five mut.</p><p class="paywall">Imprsns, the ways that we size one another up, are important to Elman’s show, and to Elman. “Sometim people know that I’m Jewish bee of my name, or my face, or anythg about my personaly,” he tells , near the start. He grew up Morn Orthodox “this really racist part of Boston lled Boston”; Jewishns is central to his life, and to his sense of self, but hasn’t always been central to his act. Elman lik to work a riffy, observatnal ve that touch, dly, on the surreal. He opens wh a b about Koko the Gorilla and Rob Williams, then follows up wh one about hors and step unts. The jok land—why <em>did</em> Koko’s handlers need to tell her that her pal Williams had died?—but Elman lightly dismiss them as “dumb garbage.” Is this the sum of a edian’s job, to enterta dienc wh fely sctized absurdi? The late, great Mch Hedberg, bls him, certaly thought so, and, for a time, so did Elman.</p><p class="paywall">Then, not long ago, a fellow-edian issued Elman a challenge. It was his role, she argued, “to illumate the terrifyg prent for dienc, and give hope to an even more terrifyg future”— other words, to get polil. Elman was skeptil, but polics, of a sort, end up fdg him. A rad show that he ma England attracted attentn, on Twter, om a uple of anti-Semic trolls. Elman rpond to the haters, but the haters were uful and multiplied. Elman had the good ia to round up all the anti-Sem befoulg his mentns onto a Twter list—“let them be on a list for once”—which he impishly named Jewish Natnal Fund Contributors.</p><p class="paywall">Essentially, he had nstcted a digal terrarium of anti-Sem that he uld monor as they excreted their poison all over the platform. One day, a tweet ught his eye. A meetg was takg place, Queens, for people cur to explore their #whens. Elman is Ashkenazi, a Jew of Eastern or Central European orig. The Nazis didn’t thk that unted for much, but ntemporary Amerin society race is a different story. Elman, too, was cur about his whens, so off he went, on the subway, to ga some sight by filtratg a group of whe supremacists.</p><p class="paywall">That creepy gatherg, which Elman skewers to perfectn, forms the nucls of his show. It’s great ic fodr: an absurd, unnervg premise whose realy turns out to be more piful than threateng. There are pastri and puzzl, not to mentn a potential meet-cute wh a young woman who, like Elman, has a problem wh Jared Khner, but for markedly different reasons. But do that stct to charm the enemy mean that he’s admirably open-md, a heroic bridger of impossible divis?
