Well, for a guy retirement, we've sure been seeg a lot of him lately, whether 's the adverts for his new flick <strong><a href=" target="_blank" class="jsx-955973305 unrled" class="tolk" rel="noopener noreferrer">Crodile Dune Los Angel</a></strong>, on late night talk shows pluggg the aforementned film, or those prolific Subu spots. "This is not a pathetic attempt to revive my saggg reer," Hogan amends wh a lgh, referrg to his latt Dune adventure, one that 15 years the wake of his last one. "What reer? A man's got a body of film of about four movi about 10 years or somethg. I do bee I thk I n do a good job of somethg and I'll enjoy , do , and sort of vanish. I don't want to be an actor for hire." <br/> <br/> For a guy who don't hanker to be a hot Hollywood property, Hogan's had a pretty damn good n of . I mean we're talkg about a guy who's been a rigger [that is he worked on bridg], a lifeguard, a boxer, and all manner of other odd jobs. "Oh yeah, the real life," he chuckl humbly when remd of his past reer paths. "I didn't get to entertament until I was like 31. I didn't star a movie until I was 46." 46 – that was the age Hogan was when he beme the pop in Mick "Crodile" Dune. Which is to say that his prev 45 years he never once sat around the hoe mg, "Damn! I wish I was an actor!" On the ntrary. "No, no, I had no tert ." <br/> <br/> <p class="jsx-3649800006 ">So how the hell did he end up a beloved celebry figure? "It was after watchg this particular televisn show on Sunday nights and everyone ed to talk about on Monday. It was lled <strong>New Fac</strong> and was a talent show. It was like <strong>Star Search</strong> wh <strong>The Gong Show</strong> mixed together. It was all about persecut' the amatr talent, you know wh a smart-ass panel of profsnal entertaers. I went on to persecute the profsnals. It was jt that I said I uld do . You know, they [my mat] were say' "Someone outta give them a taste of their own medice. Did you see what they did to that poor kid wh the piano acrdn?" They ed to huiate the people. And I did one of those "Oh, I'd give 'em a piece of my md." And they [my mat] were like "Aw, bulls***." And I was like "No, I'm gonna do ." So I wrote a letter . There was a ne-month wag list to get on the show. I wrote a letter claimg to be a tap-dancg knife thrower and a part-time shearer. I thought "They'll read this and thk I'm an idt, so I'll get on the show pretty quickly 'e they'll say, "Oh he's a real fool and we n really huiate him and have fun wh him." And worked, I mean I was on the show a week. "I went on wh a handful of kniv and big gun boots on, so I was a forenner to Tap Dawgs or any of those sort of thgs," he lghs. So that's where his love of large kniv om. "It might have e om that. I don't know. Well a rigger always rri a knife. A sharp knife and a piece of strg, that's what you mt have on you at all tim." As for the show, Hogan jt razzed the judg and earned the dience's rpect. <br/> "I jt did what everyone wanted to do. To be que hont, was more about balls than beg funny. I wasn't that funny as I look back upon . I jt did somethg that everyone wanted to do. Bee the panel of celebri were very medcre talents, you know, DJs, and game show hosts, and they were all about persecutg the poor hapls nttants. So, you know, I gave them a big taste of their own medice. But was very accurate and was funny. I picked out all of their shortgs, poted them out and told them what to work on. They had to se and nod, but they hated me. But the dience was the other way around." <br/> <br/> Needls to say, the dience's adoratn was all took to send him on his way. Next thg you know, Hogan had his own televisn show and was hockg everythg om Wfield cigarett to Foster Lager, and even his home turf of Atralia those now classic "shrimp on the barby" tourism ads. Hell, my folks bought a Subu bee of his charmg personaly. <br/> <br/> In fact, 's that very same charm that mak Hogan such a natural onscreen, spe his sistence that he's not an actor. Watchg his small body of work, one quickly notic that all of the characters Hogan portrays are like mascule Old Wt ialists; gged, slightly rougher hewn versns of Will Rogers, dispensg wty anecdot aimed at strikg a chord amongst good-natured men. I mean Crodile Dune is himself a man's man, able to wrtle gators the outback and crack the skulls of thugs the NYC subways. Dto for Lightng Jack, the outlaw character Hogan created for the film of the same name. <strong>LJ</strong> has a pricels scene where he mt teach his sikick Ben Doyle (played by Cuba Goodg Jr.) the fer pots of sex tn (when asked how he passed this knowledge on to his own real life boys, Hogan shgs and repli "Like everyone else: badly and awkwardly and hope they learned at school). Then there's the wheelchair-bound Shane <strong>Floatg Away</strong>, who eloquently ponrs the fascatn wh the female breast. Or the fun-lovg Porter <strong>Flipper</strong>, who mak toast wh a blowtorch. Each of the characters is stilled wh a certa sense of warm masculy and charmg ggedns that hearkens back to perhaps a better vantage time. But spe the allure of the characters, they all variably go back to the root: Dune. <br/> <br/> Given that fifteen years later people still regnize him as the Crodile man, don't Hogan get tired of this csant loss of anonymy? "Oh no, I'd rather be that than typest as Hannibal the Cannibal or somethg where everyone is gog around makg slurp-slurp-slurp nois and sayg, ¿Are those fava beans on your plate?¿ Like that wouldn't drive you nuts," he s before ntug. But more importantly, what li ahead now that Dune has nquered the Atralian outback, the wilds of New York, and the crazs of L.A.? Really the only bastn of metropolan ials left is Tokyo. "Yeah, Tokyo," remarks Hogan wh a snap. "For the first five years after the send one I said, "I'll never do another one." And people would all say "Why?" And I'd say, "Aw, you know I jt feel like..." And they'd say "No, you know what? You should go to Tokyo" Or "I uld see him Paris." Everyone had an ia except me. Eventually, beg slow I me around, too. And end up beg Los Angel bee of that fact that 's different to anywhere else the world. And 's publicly known, you know? You n't do a send up of Joe Smh if nobody knows Joe Smh." So would Hogan say "Never aga" aga? "No, I wouldn't. I've learned to say "Highly unlikely" and not plan any further. I don't want Mick Dune gett' around wh one of those walkers and dribblg." <br/> <br/> In addn to beg a film wh perhaps one of the longt terim's between the prev stallment, <strong>Crodile Dune Los Angel</strong> marks the send time that Hogan has worked wh director Simon Wcer. The two last worked on 1994's <strong>Lightng Jack</strong>. " I worked wh him aga bee I wanted to. He was my first choice. He's terrific and Prce to work wh, no bulls***, no prima donna nonsense," says Hogan matter-of-factly. The film also marks a rnn not only wh Hogan's wife Lda Kozlowski, but also wh Alec Wilson, who not only starred <strong>Dune II</strong> but also starred wh Hogan the Asie televisn seri <strong>Anzacs</strong>. "I got him om that," Hogan says referrg to the mid-'80s TV show. "He's only done like four movi, ls than me, four parts about 10 years or somethg. He's a ttle rancher South Atralia and he turned up as a horse wrangler on <strong> Anzacs,</strong> you know, he supplied the hors for the productn. And they grabbed him for a b part and he turned out real good, so they moved him to another part. He was a natural." <br/> <br/> Yet spe the faiar fac, one particular is missg; that of John Meillon, who played Dune's goofy sikick Wally the two prev stallments. Meillon, for those that didn't know, passed away shortly after filmg on <strong>Dune II</strong> fished. Was weird, a sad way, not havg Meillon around? "There's a photo of him the bar at Walkabout Creek, which if you're quick you might see the film. It's the John Meillon rner," says Hogan wh a fondns his voice. I didn't replace that character, I uldn't 'e he was so much the character. We missed him. But he died jt after the send one. He wasn't too good durg the send one, he was holdg on." <br/> <br/> Another recurrg element the new Dune film is the old manly men enterg a gay bar whout knowg 's a gay bar scenar. If you remember the first film Dune hs on a transvte a bar whout knowg that 's really a man. This time around Dune and Jacko (Alec Wilson) fd themselv a gay wboy bar where they f rather nicely given their leather ats, wi-brimmed hats, and gged boots. While this type of humor may seem straed and out-dated to some, 's rooted an event that actually happened to Hogan many years ago. "There's a b of tth everythg I do, you know," he says when qutned about the scene the movie. "I went to one wh Olivia Newton John, actually. It was very funny." Unlike Dune, did Hogan know what he was gettg to? "No, I didn't, no. That happened a few years ago, que a few years ago. She took me to this uh bar, her and her sister, a rtrant bar, and I said, 'I don't like here. All the guys are real good look', you know?' It sorta ma you feel like you're the uglit person the room. And I said, 'They're all perv' on you too. They're all look' at you.' And she said, 'Oh no, they're not look' at , they're look' at you!' Oi! But that was a few years ago. So what have been the most unly beasts to work wh to date? <br/> "Buffalo," says Hogan whout hatn. "'Cse if the buffalo don't want to do anythg, weighs 2000 pounds and you know, don't. So you have to hang around [and wa for to be operative]. The Asian Buffalo Atralia wh the 8 feet of horns. [That scene the first film took] all day. It's like he said, ¿I'll jt s here.¿ And you n't do anythg about ." <br/> <br/> Unly animals asi, Hogan's also found himself at odds wh the Hollywood tablishment. He's currently lockg horns wh the WGA an attempt to garner wrg creds on <strong>Crodile Dune Los Angel</strong>. When I ask him whether he is challengg the WGA's lg which left his name off the wrg creds he shgs and says, "I'd say I have to. I wrote the screenplay. I mean every word you hear out of my mouth and out of my head. And all the jok. They led that I didn't wre 'e I'm the producer and the treatment was registered wh the Guild wh Guild members and they said I didn't. They read the scripts and they said, 'Okay, well you did wre the screenplay and you wrote all the dialogue, all the jok and we believe that you did vent all the characters, but you didn't alter the plot by more than 50%, so you're not creded.' They have a panel of rears and one of them thought was 50% changed om the origal plot and the other two thought ls than 50. And I said, 'Well, if I changed 51% do that mean that the other two guys' nam wouldn't be on at all?' And they never answered me. See, I'm the Producer, the natural enemy of the wrer. Which is the weirst...I jt sat there and said [to myself] 'What's wrong wh the people?' I mean anyone who saw first two knows who wrote this. Listen to the guy talk', someone else didn't wre . They were about to go on strike agast the Producers and I'm a Producer. It didn't matter that I'm their library, sce I've been a wrer for 30 years. Sudnly I'm a Producer. And Producers have been stealg creds om wrers for years. It's like 'Oh I'm the one who said he should wear a purple hat so I want a wrer's cred.' You know how people are like wh creds, like anyone who puts money up be an Executive Producer even though they've never vised the set. It's part of the Hollywood system and I've jt bee a victim of . It don't really worry me, you know I know who wrote what, but I was disappoted the human nature of ." <br/> <br/> Ah, jt like Dune, Pl Hogan ref to lay down whout a fight. And jt like Dune, the man behd the man/myth is somethg of a gged dividualist himself, an outdoorsman, if you will. But then spltg one's time between abos Atralia, Colorado, and Santa Barbara would require you to do so. "Am I an outdoorsman? Oh yeah, given the type of lol they are," he lghs. "I mean I don't go huntg bear but I've bee a skig nut. I'd never walked on snow til I was 50, you know. There's no snow where I e om. There's snowfields Victoria Atralia and they have a very short ski season. A lot of stctors e out of there 'e if you n ski there you n ski anywhere the world. They only get like three ch of packed and so you sort of snow, ice, dirt, grass, gravel, snow, so a lot of them go on to be stctors. As for me, I'm pretty good, but I'm not much good moguls.
