The oute of Fellows' terviews was his 1996 book Farm Boys: Liv of Gay Men From the Rural Midwt, a pilatn of 36 personal narrativ of gay men, most of whom had abandoned ral livg. " Though Zak nixed Founta's first ia about gay divorce — "In Illois, we're still celebratg gay marriage!
" he says — he was trigued by her other ia of portrayg life ral gay Ameri. WF: As I was dog the terviews, then later shapg them to narrativ for publitns, I was stck over and over aga by what a personally illumatg experience this was: the sights I gaed to beg a gay male, a person om a ral background who was no longer livg and breathg farm life, yet how some of s fluenc had rried over. So one of the characters talks about how he and his partner raise pigs, and none of their gay iends n believe that they love their pigs.
