grand opera “L Huguenots” is a mystery of mil history—almost a crime need of solvg. A panoramic tragedy of relig vlence, “Huguenots” had s première at the Opéra Paris, 1836, and received well over a thoand performanc there the century that followed. Berlz, Verdi, and Liszt hailed the opera as a masterpiece. Herich Hee, not given to fulsome praise, pared to a “Gothic thedral, whose slenr lumns and lossal dome seem to have been raised by the bold hand of a giant.” By the middle of the twentieth century, though, “Huguenots” had all but disappeared. The same fate befell the remar of Meyerbeer’s output and dozens of other works the grand-opera genre. Most of them are sted to rema historil cursi, but “Huguenots” requir no special pleadg. It is a juggernt of mil-dramatic ventn, and s climactic scen, pictg the massacre of thoands of Huguenot Prottants by Catholic forc on St. Bartholomew’s Day, 1572, n still spire terror. A new productn of “Huguenots” at the Opéra—the first eighty-two years—has affirmed the work’s elemental power.</p><p class="paywall">The putative crime has a prime spect: <a href=">Richard Wagner</a>. The self-styled artist of the future lnched his reer wh Meyerbeer’s assistance. In the early eighteen-forti, Wagner was full of praise for his mentor: “Meyerbeer wrote world history, a history of hearts and feelgs; he stroyed the shackl of natnal prejudice.” Ined, Meyerbeer was one of mic’s great smopolans: a German Jew who honed his art Italy before makg his name France. By 1850, though, anti-Semism and natnalism had fected Wagner’s world view. Wagner also nmned Meyerbeer for producg “effects whout ”—a dub accatn om a poser who has an earth godss rise on a stage elevator to spout exposn.</p><p class="paywall">Yet Wagner should not be given sole blame for Meyerbeer’s eclipse. “Huguenots,” “Robert le Diable,” “Le Prophète,” and other Meyerbeer blockbters retaed their populary even at the zenh of Wagnermania, around the turn of the last century. The eventual cle of grand opera affected Jewish and Gentile posers alike: Rossi’s almighty “Guillme Tell” also dropped om sight. Better to irrate Wagner’s ghost by scribg the “Rg” as Meyerbeerque.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">“L Huguenots” begs wh a brief, remarkable overture that signals the breadth of Meyerbeer’s visn: a seri of variatns on Mart Luther’s hymn “E Fte Burg Ist Unser Gott” (“A Mighty Fortrs Is Our God”). Although Meyerbeer’s sympathi lie wh the Prottant si of the nflict, he suggts that the Prottants are not jt victims. The hymn is first heard a quietly solemn guise—srg that Wagner imated his “Tannhäer” overture—but tak on an aggrsive, belligerent tone. Even before the voic enter, Meyerbeer has evoked relign’s ght grip on the human psyche.</p><p class="paywall">The libretto of “Huguenots,” by Eugène Scribe, is a crafty exercise tensifitn. The first two acts set up romantic trigue volvg members of Huguenot and Catholic clans. A ftive atmosphere prevails as we meet the young Huguenot nobleman Raoul; the Catholic potentate Comte Sat-Bris; Sat-Bris’s dghter Valente; and Marguere Valois, the sister of Kg Charl IX. Marguere, an effort to rolve Catholic-Huguenot tensns, has creed that Raoul should marry Valente. This matchmakg seems wise, as Raoul is already love wh Valente, but a misunrstandg him to refe the offer. Sat-Bris tak offense and swears vengeance. In the early scen, Meyerbeer maximiz the lol lor and the popular flavor that bourgeois dienc expected om grand opera. But he is also reelg , showg the extent to which social divisns are rooted everyday life. The ccial turn at the begng of Act III, when Huguenots drkg a tavern tnt their Catholic unterparts. The polil begs to overtake the personal.</p><div class="Contaer-bkChBi byNLHx"></div><p class="paywall">“Huguenots” is stocked wh showpiece arias for the leads, but be creasgly evint that dividuals are helpls agast the larger social energi that ensnare them. Meyerbeer reprents those bdg forc wh a plex work of recurrg melodic shap, harmonic relatnships, rhythmic patterns, and stmental timbr—a system that helped spire Wagner’s e of lemotifs. The most obv such motif is “E Fte Burg,” which appears at tervals throughout the opera. A subtler figure, associated wh Catholic rual, is a harmonic progrsn that b a tonic chord wh a triad on the flattened sixth gree: say, A-flat major agast E major. This is first heard Act III, durg a hymn to the Virg Mary, and gleams celtially the high wds. Later, Act IV, glowers a menacg lower register as Sat-Bris and other nobl plot the massacre—a famo scene lled “Conspiracy and Blsg of the Daggers.” As the Meyerbeer scholar Robert Letellier observ, blsg has been “reversed to s dark si of maledictn.” Siarly, urtly dotted rhythms acquire a hammerg, murro drive.</p><p class="paywall">Act IV of “Huguenots” stck awe to Wagner and Verdi alike, expandg their sense of what opera uld achieve. The Blsg of the Daggers, wh s ld brass choirs, s shriekg wds, and s bloodthirsty choral chants, has a monic glamour. No ls stupendo is the love scene that follows. Raoul, havg overheard the nspirators, is torn between the ll of duty and his undyg passn for Valente. The lovers sg an ecstatilly obliv G-flat-major duet, which forests Act II of “Tristan und Isol,” not to mentn the fal movement of Tchaikovsky’s “Pathétique” Symphony. Meyerbeer’s rammg together of otherworldly bliss and genocidal rage is unnny effect. One begs to wonr how the opera beme so popular the first place: s visn of the human animal is, the end, spectacularly bleak.</p><p class="has-dropp has-dropp__lead-standard-headg paywall">Meyerbeer’s operas have been experiencg a gradual eback Europe, but they are still rarely staged Ameri. The Metropolan Opera has ignored the poser sce the late neteen-seventi, when revived “Le Prophète.” Incredibly, “Huguenots” has not been seen at the Met sce 1915, though Bard College, upstate New York, prented a very credable productn, by Thad Strassberger, 2009. The opera’s belated return to Paris was generally triumphant, even if the stagg, by Andreas Kriegenburg, had a tached, abstracted air. The actn is set a cur temporal nowhere that mix historil stum—ffs, breech, and the like—wh futuristic bone-whe spac and antiseptic chambers. What’s missg is the grty scenic tail that would rrpond to Meyerbeer’s fugu of sectarian fury.</p><p class="paywall">Fdg the right st proved a challenge. Diana Damr, a Meyerbeer specialist, was to have sung the loratura part of Marguere, but she ncelled Augt, for health reasons. Lisette Oropa was a splendid substute, bg absolute technil assurance wh a ft actorly portrayal of a naïve, self-volved royal. The fiendishly difficult role of Raoul, meanwhile, was slated for the tenor Bryan Hymel, but he whdrew ls than two weeks before openg night. The Berl-based tenor Yosep Kang saved the day wh a brave, rourceful performance. Not all of his high C-flats, Cs, and D-flats land on target, but his tone had the right lightns and brightns for grand opera—a slenr but cuttg bla. Pl Gay, as Sat-Bris, prid wh chillg nvictn over the Blsg of the Daggers. Ermonela Jaho was an urgent, rich-hued Valente; Kare Dhay expertly rried off the bel-nto fireworks of the page Urba; Nilas Tté ught the gff hearts of the Huguenot stalwart Marcel. The chos of the Opéra Paris, which has found new life unr the directn of José Luis Basso, had no fear of Meyerbeer’s periloly rapid-movg l. Michele Martti, the p, gave forward drive and terpretive shape to a long eveng—around five hours, even wh cuts.</p><p class="paywall">As for the pils endg, which Raoul and Valente die at the Huguenots’ si, Kriegenburg directed wh rtrat, avoidg the temptatn to drench the stage wh blood and populate wh Fascistic thugs. (Sat-Bris and his nspirators did, however, don Nazi-like armbands.) The superimposn of different perds rembled a photograph wh a double or triple exposure: all at once, we uld see terrors of the ep past, the recent past, and the probable future. No nsolg visns of renciliatn floated up om the fal ensemble; stead, as guards gunned down Huguenots rows, the chos chanted, “Let extermate the imp race.” There is no evince that Meyerbeer saw the massacre of the Huguenots as an allegory of anti-Semic vlence; there is also no reason to reject such a readg out of hand. The poser was acute on the subject of racial hatred. In Augt, 1839, he warned Hee that, spe signs of progrs, the anim agast Jews was unlikely to subsi the g years.
