And our relatnship would be honored and rpected,” said Roch.</p><p class="">McAuley and Roch found <a href=">Village Hearth Cohog</a>. It’s believed to be the first hog muny the natn built specifilly for LGBTQ senrs and their alli. Nearly 30 pastel-lored bungalows branch off cement walkg paths that tertwe through the neighborhood Durham, North Carola. Follow one of those paths and you’ll reach the mon hoe, surround by wdows and borred by a terra tta pat.</p><p class="">Cohog origated Denmark the 1960s. The sign mol clus shared spac — often a large kchen and dg room — but also private livg areas.</p><p class="">Image owng an apartment but dog most of the okg a shared kchen wh all the ameni. At Village Hearth, the mol works like a ndo associatn wh homeowners sharg sts for matenance and other fe. Cohog has picked up populary the US., wh more than <a href=">160 siar muni</a> around the untry, acrdg to The Cohog Associatn of the Uned Stat.</p><p class=""><strong>Unique Challeng</strong></p><p class="">Roch says she and McAuley saw the muny as an opportuny to cut through some of the unique challeng LGBTQ dividuals may face as they get olr.</p><p class="nt-medium">"We [have] seen and heard and read horror stori of people once they need to go to the standard medil mol. They are forced to go back the closet bee 's not safe or the people tnt them. [And ] took Pat and I forever to e out of the closet. We were both really late bloomers and we don't want to go back ,” said Roch.</p><p class=""><a href=">Tim Johnston</a>, the senr director of natnal projects at SAGE, an advocy and service anizatn for LGBT senrs, acknowledg that risks exist for the senrs retirement centers.</p><p class="nt-medium">“It might be isolatg them or bullyg them wh the muny. It uld be substandard re such as havg their ll bell answered more slowly than the other rints or their food always arriv ld. And some stanc we’ve heard of physil or verbal abe eher om other rints or om staff at the muni,” said Johnston.</p><p class="">Acrdg to SAGE, LGBTQ senrs are ls likely to have children and often lack the same social as heterosexual senrs. Social teractn is important as people age and there are medil and practil reasons to have others nearby. But McAuley said livg unr the same roof wh a group of iends is a ltle too close for fort. For her, hog offers a perfect f.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We n have a balance of privacy and muny. So Margaret n be as extroverted as she wants, and I n choose when I want to be social and when I want to be private,” said McAuley.</p><p class=""><strong>The Next Chapter, A Frh Space</strong></p><p class="">Roch and McAuley recently got their first chance to walk to their new home, which was still unr nstctn. They personally signed along wh the help of an archect who specializ hog velopments. They admired the vlted ceilgs, skylight and exposed beam as they wanred through the space. The attached-bungalows go for between $299,000 to $409,000 wh shared monthly fe rangg om $305 to $413 per month.</p><p class="">Before the ronavis panmic swept across the state, a few Village Hearth rints started movg to the area. And they've e om jt about everywhere around the untry, cludg California, Geia and New York. Among the new rints are Allen Keech and Christopher Ross. Before movg to Durham, the uple already had a set retirement plan: They built an e-iendly hoe on a sweepg 58-acre property southern Virgia. But they disvered that privacy uld also mean isolatn, and Ross says that didn't always feel fortable.</p><p class="nt-medium">“Y, there were two or three other gay people this town, but was a whisper. You know, 's okay as long as you don't [make] noise about ,” said Ross.</p><p class=""><strong>‘To Live, Not To Die’</strong></p><p class="">For Ross and Keech, their new Village Hearth neighborhood strik the right balance between privacy and muny.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We are gog to be havg a muny garn to grow vegetabl and u. And a dog park. And we are gog to have be and chickens,” said Keech as he walked along the cement path between the mon hoe and his new home.</p><p class="">Buildg a muny for senrs the midst of the ronavis panmic has s challeng. Along wh perm lays, some rints have moved om across the untry but were a holdg pattern wag to move to their new hom. At the end of May, Keech, Ross and a handful of others started to move . Ross says there’s prsure wh beg the first group of LGBTQ senrs to build this kd of muny.</p><p class="nt-medium">“We talked about, should we have meras?
