Wear signer sandals. Carry expensive leather bags and satchels. Grow a beard and get a great haircut. Smell fantastic. Wear jewellery that isn’t horrible. And do the thgs all at once. That was a big change. It was a long time g, but the metros took up wh aplomb and are, my opn, startg to outdrs women. And then stck me why …</p><p>I rell walkg around a partment store New York a few years ago, meanrg idly through the women’s sectn and ponrg life’s big fashn qutns. Do I really want to look like an ’80s warrr prcs woven leather and a wi belt? No. Neher am I feelg the Victorian vibe. (At my age, a high-neck bloe and long skirt would add, oh, about a century.) Who me up wh the ia that crop tops on the red rpet are a legimate, translatable “trend”? Shoe boots that expose your to wter are dumb. Everythg is too short if you don’t have p th legs. Why n’t I wear a bra wh anythg? Why do a really nice eveng bag st $US2000 ($2750)? Where the hell are the geo pantsus? And more unreasonable stuff like that.</p><p>I wanred to the men’s partment and all of a sudn I was pulled up short by the ntrast. Betiful piec, classic shap that had been reworked fantastic fabrics, lame YSL dner jackets, leather shirts that were as soft as butter, new fabritns knwear that looked and felt better than any kn history. Velvet and bro loafers, shmere jackets, silk prted sus and agels, clever overats. Dign that was phg boundari but was still realistic, still wearable and of a certa qualy – a qualy that was meant to last more than a uple of seasons.</p><p>That’s the problem wh womenswear: the nstant foc on the now and the new. No sooner has a trend e along – one that you actually like – then ’s forced out by the return of the baby doll mi drs. My iend Damien mentned that he had plimented a woman on her jacket and she replied, almost apologetilly: “Oh, but ’s three seasons old.”</p><p>Most men don’t thk like that. A betiful piece of clothg is a betiful piece of clothg, full stop. There is somethg smart about the way men shop. They replace thgs (“Oh, I need a new whe dner shirt” or “I probably need a new navy sweater; this is 10 years old”) rather than nstantly followg sane trends that don’t su them. Mastream jewellery for men has been so safe and apologetic recent tim – a simple silver bangle, a diamond stud earrg, small amulets on leather rds. It’s a “genr appropriate” style that says, I’m a ltle metro, but, hey, no way girly.</p><p>To my md, phg tradnal genr lims is highly attractive. As a David Bowie-obssed teen, I was thrilled to see him make-up and earrgs (no one has ever looked as great as he did blue eyhadow and a tailored su the <em>Life on Mars</em> vio). I say skip the leather and silver tat and go hard on the diamonds, pearls, opals, whatever.</p><p>A Swedish fashn boss, and one of the most vastatgly stylish men I have ever seen, once met me for lunch at Sydney’s Rockpool rtrant, a popular statn for barristers and bsmen bland expensive sus. Olive-skned, wh long black hair, he wore a whe open-necked shirt, a bpoke navy pstriped su, green velvet slippers, one gold drop earrg, neck tattoos and a gemstone gold rg on every fger. Superb. If he had also been wearg smudged kohl eyeler, I would have found my perfect man.</p><p>Rappers and rock stars have certaly expand the ncept of jewellery for men, wh their gold chas and diamond skull rgs, but Pharrell his mure pearls was a genue shock. A wonrful shock. How great if men started wearg pearls, and brooch, and diamante drop earrgs (very nice agast a tuxedo).</p><p>As fashn blurs the l between genrs, and we all wear hoodi and legggs, and parkas and sus, the last barriers to fall are sho and jewellery. I once noticed a man Neiman Marc Los A, who was wearg a sat bomber jacket, wh his jeans tucked to high-heeled stiletto snakk boots. He turned some heads, to be sure, but I appld his choice.
