CLD GAY
The life and works of French botanist Cl (Cld) Gay (1800–1873) are prented, wh special nsiratn to Orchidaceae. This work aims to brg to light the life of a brilliant scientist who dited his profsnal life to the study of Chile’s natural history and his seldom-mentned monumental work that ntas the first plete orchid flora of Chile. The most important morn and ntemporary biblgraphil sourc have been nsulted, as well as Gay’s origal publitns. Cl (Cld) arrived Chile 1828 and lived the untry until 1842, engaged by the Chilean ernment to nduct a scientific survey of the untry. He traveled across the untry llectg objects of natural history which beme the foundatn stone of the Cabet of Natural History, the precursor of Chile’s Natnal Mm of Natural History. Gay returned to France 1842 and, missned by the Chilean Mister of the Interr, published his Historia físi y políti Chile, a monumental work 30 volum that were published between 1844 and 1871. Eight volum, published Paris between 1845 and 1852, ntag 3767 speci of plants, were dited to botany. Followg the plete works of Juan Ignac Mola’s Sagg sulla Storia Naturale l Chili (1782) and Ruiz and Pavon’s Flora Pevianae et Chilensis (1789–1803) was the first attempt to produce a plete flora of Chile. A total of 49 speci of Orchidaceae were scribed and partly illtrated, a remarkable achievement if we nsir that by the turn of the 21st century, a total of orchids was only 52 had been reported for Chile. Cld Gay is nsired the first rerr of the untry’s history and the founr of morn natural science republin Chile. * claudio gay 2065 *
Especially tertg is Stuardo’s treatment of the support given by the young Chilean natn to Gay his scientific and historgraphic rearch.
Stipends, paid out over more than a , enabled Gay to travel throughout Chile and even to return to Europe for a vis to the Archiv of the Indi Seville. Both Stuardo and Feliú agree, however, that Gay’s twenty-four volume, Historia físi y políti Chile, which rulted om the ernment support, was an important ntributn to Chilean science and letters and well worth the money spent.

Feliú and Stuardo also exame the role of Gay Chile’s neteenth-century historgraphic velopment. Aga they are agreement that Gay was the founr of historic studi Chile.
Gay’s history was of the narrative variety and was champned by Andrés Bello, Diego Barros Arana and most other young historians of the mid-neteenth century. But Gay was a more subtle advote of his methodology.
In a letter to the Mister of Edutn Manuel Montt 1845, Gay argued that while philosophil history had validy Europe where historic rearch was an old practice, Chile, where the wrg of history was brand new and where ltle historic data had been llected, was not possible to build any valid, signifint philosophil system. Quietly and private rrponnce rather than public wrg, Gay fought the battle of methodology by takg his se to the ernment which, through s fancial support of tn, was a major force the Gay was the vanguard of historgraphic velopment he was also signifint aidg the progrs of natural science Chile. Whout qutn Gay is servg of the close scty given him by Stuardo and Feliú.
