In a 2011 natnal survey of 158 gay and lbian adoptive parents, nearly half reported experiencg bias or discrimatn om a child welfare worker or birth fay member durg the adoptn procs. In fact, many gay dads tell that they believe their sexual orientatn worked their favor when adoptg an fant domtilly bee some birth moms wanted to rema their child’s “only mother”.
Some agenci specifilly or subtly prohib placement wh members of the LGBTQ+ muny, but more and more are open to workg wh LGBTQ+ fai (pecially lbian and gay), and many actively solic them. In most domtic fant adoptn, the expectant mother or uple selects the adoptive parents and we have seen a signifint shift acceptance of gay dads and lbian moms by expectant mothers, pecially gay dads.
LS OPPOSN TO GAY MARRIAGE, ADOPTN AND MILARY SERVICE
Statistics are hard to e by, but rearch suggts that 60% of the adoptn agenci the US accept applitns om same-sex upl, which means that 40% of adoptn agenci have wrten or unwrten polici prohibg or disuragg placg children wh gays, lbians, bisexuals, or transgenr persons. Six--ten llege graduat support allowg gays to marry (60%), pared wh 51% of those wh some llege experience and 38% of those wh no more than a high school tn.
Nearly two-thirds (65%) of those who attend relig servic at least weekly oppose allowg gays and lbians to marry, as do 59% of those who say relign is very important their liv. However, while Hispanics are more likely to support gay marriage than to oppose , they are roughly evenly divid regardg gay adoptn, wh 44% favor and 48% opposed. A majory of people who say relign is very important their liv oppose allowg gay and lbian upl to adopt (55%), while about one--four (23%) people who say relign is ls than very important oppose this.
