The 'Gay Gordons' remas a popular uple dance, still ocsnally to be found at New England ntra danc, for example, and at Sttish dancg events, where has been over time one of the most popular Sttish Country Danc. Perhaps the earlit reference to the dance dat to the year 1915, although Christe Mart (2002) says there was a prev reference to a Gay Gordons dance 1907. The word 'gay, sometim spelled 'gie' (as Jimmy Shand's 1942 rerdg) or 'gey', perhaps to preclu morn associatns of 'gay' wh homosexualy, this ntext means 'handsome appearance' or 'cked out' (as formal kilted drs).
