We believe that lbian, gay, bisexual, transgenr, and queer lerature is fundamental to the prervatn of our culture, and that LGBTQ liv are affirmed when our stori are wrten, published, and read. The purpose of the Awards the early years was to intify and celebrate the bt lbian and gay books the year of their publitn.
The Awards gave natnal visibily to a lerature that had tablished a firm if nascent beachhead through a work of dynamic lbian and gay publishers and bookstor sprgg up across Ameri. The Awards have ranged over many tegori, reflectg the wi spectm of LGBTQ books, and om the very first year they have ma the statement that lbian, gay, bisexual and trans stori are part of the lerature of the natn. In early 2010, an effort led by board member Nila Griffh, Lambda Lerary fund, staffed, and lnched an onle prence at which celebrat, supports, serv, rms, entertas, and nnects the whole of the brilliantly diverse muny that creat and supports lbian, gay, bisexual and trans lerature.
Gay News. The lambda was selected as a symbol by the Gay Activists Alliance of New York 1970, followg the Stonewall Rts, and was clared the ternatnal symbol for gay and lbian rights by the Internatnal Gay Rights Congrs Edburgh, Stland, 1974. The Sttish Mori Group hosted the first ever Internatnal Gay Rights Conference Edburgh om 18 to 22 December 1974.

Nearly 400 people attend the nference, which led 1978 to the tablishment of the Internatnal Gay Associatn, later to bee the Internatnal Lbian and Gay Associatn (ILGA).
