The Gay Gazette was a ee weekly newspaper published by Chronos Publishg, aimed to mop up the market om the llapse of Capal Gay 1995. Rather than buy the tle, Chronos, who published Pk Paper and Boyz at the time, set up the Gay Gazette a week after the llapse of Capal Gay, eded by Roger Goo, who had been Capal Gay’s most recent edor. The Pk Paper was seen as beg a left-wg lbian newspaper, whereas Capal Gay was que often scribed as a right-wg male newspaper.

1981. CAPAL GAY
In April 1983, followg the llapse of Gay News – Bra’s only natnal gay and lbian publitn – Capal Gay announced would ‘temporarily’ extend ’s distributn area to selected gay clubs areas such as Nottgham, Manchter and Newstle. The aim was to provi an ’emergency’ news service until such tim as a new natnal gay and lbian publitn emerged. It never happened: ndidate publitns such as Gay Reporter, the New Gay News and (unsurprisgly) HIM magaze all tered exclively or predomantly to a gay male market.
And so, July 1985, Capal Gay announced that was reluctantly endg s out-of-London distributn. The very fact that had extend s distributn the first place dited how different Capal Gay was om the other publitns of that perd.
It actually sponsored London’s Lbian and Gay Swchboard and, wh the emergence of the HIV/AIDS crisis, ran the world’s first weekly lumn on AIDS, wrten by Julian Meldm.
