Gaynor grew up Bedford-Stuyvant, known lolly as “Bed-Stuy, ” but his neighborhood, “They lled Bed-Stuy, Do or Die, ” he said. “The black church is eply, eply entrenched the Black muny, and so many of s views of homosexualy om the Black church and and s terpretatn of the Bible. So when he was 19, and had fallen love wh another man, his father nonted him about beg gay.
Gaynor said wasn’t ready to e out. Gaynor graduated om Morehoe College Atlanta, and days before startg studyg for his graduate gree at Columbia School of Journalism, his father died.
They never renciled, said Gaynor, but they did have that most important nversatn his fal hours.
