funk pedigree like a learned aficnado. When the folks at Davis’ then-new label Warner Bros. rmed him mid- that labelmate Prce nsired him among his mil hero, you n envisn the se beamg om the tmpet great’s face as he penned, “I was happy and honored that he looked at me that way.” Mil saw himself Prce—a man who always wanted to ph his art new and challengg directns spe what was nsired proper wh the nf of such superfluo terms as "jazz," "pop," or "R&B." But one of the most treasured ems behd that door is the storied “Rubberband” rerdg ssn between Prce and Mil, which took place at Paisley Park on March 1, 1986. When I started really livg wh him, was around when <em>Tutu</em> me out [1986]. But at no pot did he go to me and say, ‘You should go back and listen to <em>E.S.P.</em> or <em>Kd of Blue.</em>’ That never happened. He didn’t want gog back and listeng to that old stuff. He always thought I would be a good dmmer, so he got me a k om Yamaha and put his basement Malibu. So I went down there and started bangg on the dms aga, but he go to me, ‘Hold on a send.’ He got me a Walkman, puts Prce’s <em>1999</em> and says, ‘Go learn how to play this.’ And I sat down there until I learned how to play the whole album on my own.”</p><div role="headg" aria-level="3" class="headg-h3">Easy Mo Bee, llaborator on 1992’s <em>Doo-Bop</em></div><p>“I didn’t know that Prce and Mil Davis had done some rerdg together until his manager at the time, Gordon Meltzer, brought up the Rubberband ssns. Matter of fact, there were two songs om the <em>Doo Bop</em> album, ‘High Speed Chase’ and ‘Fantasy,’ that they took om ‘the Vlt.’ We had gotten six songs done, me and Mil, but then he passed away. And that’s when Gordon me to me and said, ‘Listen, we have two songs to make a plete album that we’re gonna take om the Vlt.’ Now I’m not 100 percent sure, but I thk that ‘High Speed Chase’ had e om those Rubberband ssns wh Prce. You would never get to know that, bee the horn part was given to me as an a ppella track and a new song was built around . And hontly, I’m not that certa would be amazg if we actually got to hear . He was listeng to everythg, and fely at that time a lot more funk mic, pop and whatever was on the rad. And Prce was all that. Obvly he wasn’t listeng to the jazz stuff that was gog on at the time, he wouldn’t need to. The mic that moved him was new mic—mic he was unaware of—and Prce was at the top of his list. Ultimately, I thk Mil’ nnectn to Prce was through Prce’s nnectn to Jam Brown. From what I remember, Mil really dug that sgle-note guar stuff that you’d hear wh Jam Brown. Mil would be onstage playg those kds of riffs on his tmpet. Like durg a funk groove, he’d break out somethg very siar to a guar lick. So when I thk he heard Prce, he immediately regnized that Jam Brown fluence, and that’s what drew him . And, of urse, you n’t ny how funky Prce’s mic is, and that was a real ep thg for Mil. He wanted to brg that funk groove to jazz more durg that time I was rerdg wh him on <em>Tutu.</em> And that’s where Prce me to play. In fact, I went to Mil’ 62nd birthday party at this rtrant down on the east si of Manhattan. So what happened was Marc Miller and I were workg on a Luther Vandross album, and we had jt left the stud to head to the party om workg on the Luther rerd, which was <em>Any Love</em>. We walked to the place and the stud assistant Kathy had known I was gog there later that night so she had a shirt and a sports at sent up for me to wear. Meanwhile, Marc had on jeans and this strged T-shirt thg bee was warm outsi. So we walked and everyone was wearg like tuxedos and sh, and the next thg you know Mil stands up om his table and lls over. So I walk up to his table and there’s Prce stg there. And Mil says, ‘Prce, this is Jason Mil. Jason Mil, this is Prce.’ (<em>Lghs</em>).  So I go to shake his hand, and Prce giv me the lamt-ass handshake. Prce was pissed allegedly, bee Mil was late to the party so he only stayed for a ltle while and then spl shortly thereafter. But I do know that Prce really dug Mil. When Mil was the hospal after he had dropped out of the Grammys that year, Prce had sent him this ne that had all kds glter on and stuff. Mil really dug what he was dog at that time. As a matter of fact, Prce wrote some mic that he sent to Mil, a track lled ‘Can I Play Wh U.’ So they hand to me and had me mix to work to the <em>Tutu</em> album. But when Prce heard , I thk he felt was too different om the rt of the album and wound up takg back. But his prence was there on that rerd. And I thk subnscly knowg that the song was a ltle b different om the rt of the album, I wrote ‘Full Nelson,’ which is the last song on <em>Tutu,</em> to kd of bridge the gap. It had more of a feel that Prce was dog at the time, and I thought would be an tertg way to bridge ‘Can I Play Wh U’ there. But they wound up not g , so ‘Full Nelson’ is on s own on that album.
