REVIEW: GAY FOR PAY WH BLAKE & CLAY AT GAY FOR PAY PRODUCTNS/CROW’S THEATRE
The two workshop lears, Blake and Clay, are two gay actors stgglg to fd work, so stead they swch to nng semars on how to thentilly ‘play gay’ for straight actors, bee well, they are dog anyway…. Topics are timely as the two talk about everythg om current gay polil figur like Pete Buttigieg to Toronto-specific issu like the Police’s rponse to serial killer Bce McArthur all humouro ways.
GAY FOR PAY WH BLAKE AND CLAY – ON STAGE NOV 16 TO 27, 2022 (TORONTO)
The show isn’t all lghs, as do take a sudn turn to a ser note wh monologu on what means to “pass” for straight as a gay actor or their personal stggl around limed reprentatns of gay characters film. Frh off their triumphant n at the 2022 Toronto Frge Ftival, Gay for Pay wh Blake & Clay has brought a limed revival to Streetr Crowsnt’s Stud Theatre. Daniel Krolik and Jonathan Wilson rume their rol as Blake and Clay, two out-of-work gay actors who are fely terted your relatnship wh any lol stg directors. But more importantly, they’ve teamed up to create a masterclass to teach straight male actors how to ace the ultimate, Osr-wng part: a gay man.
GAY FOR PAY WH BLAKE & CLAY
After all, the number of straight male actors who, to this day, we appld merely for their bravery “playg gay” is enough to make the md reel.
From the moment the show starts and Blake and Clay earntly expla why ’s so important to teach the new, woke generatn of straight men to play gay (after all, they moisturize their fac now, they’re halfway there), ’s clear that the jok and gog to be g fast and hard. While Blake and Clay’s six-pot procs to beg the bt not-gay actor playg gay possible hasn’t changed the past four months — after all, as they’ll assure you, ’s a tried and te method om two verifiable gays — the small but mighty creative team of Krolik, Campbell, stage manager Jam Hyett, and producer Rachel Kennedy has expertly relibrated their productn to f the new venue. I won’t spoil the surprise for the unfortunate souls who missed out on Gay for Pay’s Frge n, but the quiet closens of the brilliant moment is amplified to an almost afeng silence this time around.
