On gay datg apps like Grdr, many ers have profil that nta phras like “I don’t date Black men, ” or that claim they are “not attracted to Latos. Sce 2015 I’ve been studyg LGBTQ culture and gay life, and much of that time has been spent tryg to untangle and unrstand the tensns and prejudic wh gay culture.
I’m seekg to move beyond simply scribg the problem and to better unrstand why some gay men behave this way.
From 2015 to 2019 I terviewed gay men om the Midwt and Wt Coast regns of the Uned Stat. A slice of that project – which was recently published the journal Deviant Behavr – explor the way gay men ratnalize their sexual racism and discrimatn on Grdr. The other way that I observed some gay men jtifyg their discrimatn was by amg a way that put the emphasis back on the app.

But while the LGBTQ+ movement looks forward to a world whout homophobia and transphobia, too often fails to look si self at the racial bias that people of lor face the cis-straight world.
