The botched heist and ensug hostage standoff — an absurdist melodrama that featured an -person plea for surrenr by Wojtowicz's lover (dragged om the Kgs County Hospal psychiatric ward where she was unr observatn followg a recent suici attempt); a circ-like crowd of thoands cheerg and jeerg behd police barris; and ultimately the gunng down of Wojtowicz's -nspirator Sal Naturale on the tarmac at Kennedy Airport while they awaed an pe plane — was the basis for the 1975 Osr-wng movie <em>Dog Day Afternoon</em> starrg Al Paco as Wojtowicz and John Cazale as Naturale. While the movie's nng time is 125 mut, the actual standoff lasted 14 hours, the entire saga playg out on lol New York Cy televisn, even preemptg verage of Richard Nixon's acceptance of the Republin printial nomatn at the party's natnal nventn that same eveng. Yet even those New York rints who were glued to their TVs don't know half the story's credible twists and turns, which are now, at last, fully ptured by Berg and Kerdren through rare footage and exhstive, expletive-laced terviews wh Wojtowicz before he passed away 2006, at age 60, om ncer. John Wojtowicz's Gay Milary Experience</h2><p data-no-id="6" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Wojtowicz's ary service is acknowledged <em>Dog Day Afternoon, </em>but not the extent to which shaped him. He had his first homosexual experience basic trag. As he tells the filmmakers: "I met a hillbilly by the name of Wilbur. One night I was dreamg that I was gettg a blowjob and stead was the real thg and Wilbur was blowg me. And jt before I me, I woke up and I go, 'What are you dog?' And he said, 'Well, don't feel good?' And I go, 'Yeah, feels good.' He said, 'Well?' I said, 'Well, keep on gog.' And then we kept havg this relatnship bee he blew great, he was like a summer breeze." Wojtowicz was jt as eply affected when, while statned Vietnam, he was one of the few survivors of a rocket attack on his base. "When he was a kid, he was good. He was no trouble," says his mother, Terry. The Robbers Were, Uh, Close</h2><p data-no-id="12" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">As picted <em>Dog Day Afternoon</em>, a third robber, Bobby Wtenberg, got ld feet and fled the bank jt before police arrived. The night before the heist, he and Wojtowicz slept together. As Wojtowicz tells : "We went to the Goln Nugget Motel, the night before the robbery. While we were there, I grabbed a hold of Bobby Wtenberg and I wanted to fk him. 'Cse he ed to drs up as a girl wh a drs, right? And he go, 'What are you talkg about?' I said, 'I want to fk you.' 'Well, I don't want you fkg me.' I said, 'I'm givg you $50,000, right? You're tellg me I'm not gonna get a fk out of ? You're out of your fkg md! Bee I'm gettg a fk out of this!' So then I fked him. And then Sal me over and he wanted to fk Bobby. Bobby tells him no. So they start gettg to a fight. So I e out of the shower, I say, 'Hey, what are you two bch argug about? Hey, what is wh you Bobby? We uld all die tomorrow, let's die happy.'"</p><h2 data-no-id="14" class="css-qplj0i et3p2gv0">3. Marlon Brando Is Partly to Blame</h2><p data-no-id="16" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Jt prr to the robbery, on that very same afternoon, the three men went to a Tim Square movie theater to watch <em>The Godfather</em>, which had been released that March and would rema theaters until the end of 1972 (earng a then-rerd $81.5 ln North Ameri alone). They were so spired by the film, their ransom note read: "This is an offer you n't refe." (Addg to the story's preposterons, of urse, is that <em>Godfather </em>-stars Paco and Cazale would wd up st <em>Dog Day Afternoon</em>.)</p><h2 data-no-id="18" class="css-qplj0i et3p2gv0">4. They Tried a Lot of Banks</h2><p data-no-id="20" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Outsi of the first bank they tend to rob, on Manhattan's Lower East Si, one of the guys dropped his shotgun gettg out of the r. It went off and drew a crowd of onlookers, and they quickly fled. At the next bank, Queens's Howard Beach, they were foiled once aga when they ran to one of their mothers' bt iends jt as they were about to pull their guns. And back Manhattan, they had to scrap still another bank when, on a dry n of their getaway, they crashed to a r.</p><h2 data-no-id="22" class="css-qplj0i et3p2gv0">5. One Journalist Got a Hell of a Story</h2><p data-no-id="24" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Former <em>New York Daily News</em> reporter Robert Kappstatter began his shift at five that eveng, a uple hours to the hostage suatn. As Kappstatter rells: "[My] edor said, 'Start workg the story by phone, see what you n get.' So I said, 'I'll ll the bank.' So I lled the bank and lo and behold, this guy [Wojtowicz] picks up the phone and says he's one of the bands. So I started terviewg him. He's givg the great quot. I said, 'Are you aaid of dyg? Could you really kill the people?' I'm stg there listeng to this, takg not, typg like crazy and my md is gog, 'Wow, what a story!'"</p><h2 data-no-id="26" class="css-qplj0i et3p2gv0">6. Wojtowicz Screened the Movie Prison</h2><p data-no-id="28" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0"><em>Dog Day Afternoon</em> h theaters September 1975, three years to Wojtowicz's 20-year feral prison sentence Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. (On appeal, he would be released after five years.) Wojtowicz was the subject of much abe for his celebry stat prison, cludg a vic gang rape and beatg that left him hospalized and would e him nightmar s later. So when the warn ially objected to showg the film to Lewisburg's general populatn, Wojtowicz was livid: "The warn said, 'We're not showg this.' And I said, 'If you don't show this the prison, I'll go to the prs and I'll hang you by your fkg nnolis. And I'll start the biggt prison rt you ever saw. I want the fkg movie shown and I want shown to the mat bee I promised them for years, bee nobody believed there was gog to be a movie.'"</p><h2 data-no-id="30" class="css-qplj0i et3p2gv0">7. Wojtowicz's Story Did Not End Happily</h2><p data-no-id="32" class="css-aeyldl et3p2gv0">Acrdg to an archival news report the documentary, Hollywood paid Wojtowicz $100,000 for the rights to his story. Other reports om the time claim he'd also been granted 1 percent of the <em>Dog Day Afternoon</em> prof. (At prent, the film has earned some $50 ln.) But beyond a uple thoand dollars he put toward his lover's sex change, Wojtowicz saw very ltle of that money, which would be ntted urt right up until his ath. (The New York State Crime Victims Compensatn Board diverted tens of thoands of dollars to the hostag.) For most of his post-prison life, he lived wh his mother Brooklyn and, like so many ex-ns, stggled to fd steady employment. Often he returned to the scene of the robbery to sell tographs and take pictur. He once even applied (unsuccsfully) for a legimate bank job. "I went to Chase Manhattan when I first was out at the halfway hoe. And I wanted to be a secury guard," Wojtowicz says. "My reference was <em>Dog Day Afternoon</em>.
