Though ’s not a crimal offense to be gay Zimbabwe, many the LGBT muny there face discrimatn and arrt bee of loose terpretatns of the untry’s nstutn, which outlaws same-sex marriag. LGBT advot have reported arrts whout charg, but ernment officials say the law is nsistent wh the untry’s culture.

GAY RIGHTS IN ZIMBABWE
I’m agast gay rights Zimbabwe! I know… a weird thg to say right? And kd of problematic today’s global polil climate, not to mentn flat-out homophobic. * it's not gay if its in zimbabwe *

ZIMBABWE GAY TRAVEL - LGBT RMATN AUGT 2023
The crease the number of visible gay and trans people is sometim treated as a cursy or a e for ncern by crics, but ’s not a surprise. It’s normal. * it's not gay if its in zimbabwe *
And kd of problematic today’s global polil climate, not to mentn flat-out homophobic. Well, orr to unteract the “he’s jt another ignorant bigot” ncln that most people will undoubtedly jump to om the statement above, let me prefix my argument today by sayg that I myself am a gay man; and of the 21 years that I’ve been on this earth, I n tly say that the only time that I’ve ever felt as if I was beg te to myself was this year ( my first year of universy). I’ve had personal experience wh the hateful social language and thoughts surroundg the issue of homosexualy Zimbabwe.
TURNS OUT, BARBIELAND ISN'T AS GAY AS S QUEER FANS HAD HOPED
Gay rights advot Zimbabwe say laws untry prent somethg of a Catch-22 for LGBT muny * it's not gay if its in zimbabwe *
In addn to this, I also (to my ept regret) assiated wh the homophobic agenda that is not only law, but wily supported Zimbabwe, the past. In high school, I’d often publicly hurl sults at gay ias om the fort of my closet, and spoke out agast same-sex marriage, the trans muny, non-bary inti, etc. The slur that personally land que a few impactful blows over the years and forced me to hidg… The were the simple words, “You’re Gay”.
And ’s bee of the very reasons that I fd myself standg agast the prospect of gay rights Zimbabwe today.
GAY ZIMBABWEANS FIGHT STIGMA, HARSH LAWS
Although sexual acts between people of the same sex illegal Zimbabwe, the gay and Lbian Associatn of Zimbabwe (GALZ) has 400 members acrdg to former Uned Stat ambassador to Zimbabwe Charl Ray. Ray thought this figure was small for a proment anisatn like GALZ. He poted out, however, that Print Robert Mugabe has * it's not gay if its in zimbabwe *
And is for the very reasons that I stand by my asssment that gay rights should not be imposed on a natn like Zimbabwe, no matter how small and unimportant this natn may seem on the global stage. As a primary source (which I exprsed above), I n nfintly say om personal experience that homophobia is a praised culture Zimbabwe.
GAY ASSOCIATN ZIMBABWE HAS 400 MEMBERS
* it's not gay if its in zimbabwe *
This even extends to hidn members of the rabow muny, where feelgs of ternal homophobia, as well as shameful thoughts, are supported by narrativ of subversn by the relig and cultural normals the untry (Marnell, J., Oliveira, E., & Khan, G. So then how would be possible for such a natn to stute gay rights today’s morn world? Pastor Mart Ssempa (2011) said that anti-gay rights bills Uganda were beg liberately killed largely due to unmocratic threats om Wtern natns.
And this wasn’t jt an opn, bee at the time var ernments lobbied, the Germans said they’d cut aid, and the US amend fancial legislatn regardg untri emed guilty of persecutg gay people. Whilst this is unrstandable om the Wt’s perspective – bee gay rights are legally permted and viewed as a basic human right by 32 natns the UN, most of which are members of the ‘Wt’ – n also be viewed as a subversive tactic to force natns away om their lolized beliefs.
For this reason, the laws that ern a untry should be based on that untry’s particular valu, and not imposed on by global agenda; and this appli even if the beliefs, and therefore subsequent laws, are as heo and universal homophobia.
HOW GAY IENDLY IS ZIMBABWE? - VICTORIA FALLS FOM
Only when the perspective of a majory of s rints is shifted om hate n homosexualy be legalised whout imposg wtern laws, bee that se s own people will be makg the changg cisns.
Whilst tly is sad for me, and many others like me, that I will never get to exist as myself wh my untry, gay rights beg banned Zimbabwe remas a shg bean of hope that maybe globalizatn isn’t the monster we’ve all feared; a monster that’s ready and willg to swallow up many diverse lolized cultur for one diluted global one. Bee spe the wi variety and flow of rmatn and people around the world, there are mimal signs of a global culture the makg, and even fewer signs of cled polil natnalism, the latter proven by anti-gay laws still remag full effect Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe has a LGBT+ travel rank of 181 wh a total gay travel sre of 20.
