[The clone] beme this amalgam and then Parker really took off wh .”</p><p>But not everyone was equally ee to wear the stume. “The clone look was certaly about a whe gay man’s rponse and engagement wh those archetyp,” says Ben Barry, the an of the school of fashn at the New School’s Parsons School of Dign, whose rearch foc on fashn’s relatnship to masculy, sexualy, and the body. “The whens and the body-nscns of terms of which bodi didn’t have the same privilege to wear is an important element to highlight.” This was the other si of the . “There was this obssive rejectn of anythg that was soft or feme,” Calendo says, “and that’s why the clone perd is one of nformy and opprsivens.” (Lookg back though, he adds wh a lgh, “However, I was not above wearg a flannel shirt to get laid, you know what I mean?”)</p><p>Prentg as mascule public was physilly safer for gay guys, but the clone stume pulled double duty, Barry says, tweakg tradnal masculy while also signalg to other queer folks. “Clone as a word don’t do jtice to the real kd of subversn that went around wh that look,” he says. “A straight man wouldn’t style his jeans that way. [He] wouldn’t wear that f of a plaid shirt, wouldn’t wear that f of a nim jacket. So was drawg om the athetic but queerg through the f, cut, and silhouette.”</p><p>This legacy of reachg back to (mostly straight whe) Amerina and brgg to the queer-and-now is still alive and well. Jam Flemons often works Amerina stapl like tanks and tcker jackets to his genr-ntral eclectic basics brand, <a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Phlemuns</a>. He styled many of Lil Nas X’s early looks, cludg the 2019 <em>Time</em> ver that featured the sger a red wboy-spired getup. Further proof that the clone isn’t ad: Lil Nas X’s “Montero (Call Me By Your Name)” vio featur an army of nim-clad doubl of the sger, along wh the lyric “I wanna fuck the on I envy”—which uld be a pretty great clone motto.</p><p>Flemons has featured tcker jackets his drops sce 2017. “I wanted to sign the classic Phlemuns all-Amerin kd of jacket that you n jt throw on,” he says. “I was lookg to vtage Levis as spiratn. I’m very much to the seventi, and I always look for that one element that flips the garment on s head. So I add that poted seventi llar on this really tradnal style, and have jt sce then played wh different fabritns.”</p><p>While preparg his summer releas—cutout tanks, backls t-shirts, and chaps that are more darg than his ual offergs—he’s been thkg about the way garments like the have bee our current visual reprentatn of queerns.</p><div data-attr-viewport-monor="le-recirc" class="le-recirc-wrapper le-recirc-observer-target-2 viewport-monor-anchor"></div><p>“I fely thk there is some type of specific garment inty or uniform the queer stratosphere, and ti back to those 70s and 80s roots of liberatn for Black people and for queer people,” he says. “There’s this munal thg happeng right now where people are more open that they’re trans and non-bary or bisexual and not jt on the spectm of beg straight, gay, male, female. Society has jt put the stctur around to keep unr ntrol and place, but we’re g back to our roots that have always been there.”</p><p>It’s almost as if the label-ls eedom of the early Post-Stonewall years—even if was jt a fantasy glimpsed through Parker’s work—is fally g te, though whout the clone look. What we’re seeg now is neher stume nor nformy.
