In 1864, Gayle ma headl when he paid to publish an ad The Selma Dispatch seekg funds exchange for plottg the murrs of Lln, Vice Print Johnson and Secretary of State William Seward, the same three men who were targeted John Wilk Booth's assassatn plot.
Lln was assassated four months later and Gayle was arrted Alabama on May 25, 1865. Gayle claimed the ad was meant as but was nvicted. In 1867, Gayle received a full pardon om Andrew Johnson.
