The Gay Liberatn Front (GLF) formed the wake of the Stonewall Rts, brgg a new wave of people to the LGBTQ polil activism that had been growg throughout the 1960s.

Some highlights of materials clud the project are visually stunng posters and signs created by ACT UP durg the 1980s; inic posters created for the “Gay-Ins” anized by the Gay Liberatn Front durg the 1970s as well as early pri celebratns; signs om the historic march on Washgton; and some of the earlit signs created for monstratns anized by 1950s-era homophile anizatns like the Mattache Society.

Some of the earlit posters e om the homophile era (1940s-1969) and document anizatns such as the Mattache Society, the Internatnal Commtee for Sexual Equaly, and the East Coast Homophile Organizatns (ECHO); as well as the Annual Remr monstratns.

The posters not only show the social and fashn trends of their time, but they also reveal a work of gay erotic artists and the velopment of safer sex msagg targeted to LGBTQ muni. In the Uned Kgdom the Gay Liberatn Front (GLF) had s first meetg the basement of the London School of Enomics on 13 October 1970.

It was at this pot the emergence of a divi wh the gay activist movement occurred maly due to a difference iologi, after which a number of groups cludg Organisatn for Lbian and Gay Actn (OLGA), Stonewall Equaly Limed (which foced on lobby tactics), the Lbian Avengers and OutRage!

In the early hours of June 28, 1969, patrons of the Stonewall Inn chose to fight back after years of police harassment, igng six days of Gay Liberatn Front was found direct rponse to the Stonewall Rts. What a time was to be an artist and to be gay New York, wh the lik of Hujar, Warhol, Mapplethorpe, Wojnarowicz, Harg, Arthur Trs, and Duane Michals, to name but a few.

Hujar’s boyiend at the time, Jim Fouratt, arrived on the scene to anise for the Gay Liberatn Front (GLF), the first polil group to ce homosexualy s name. The poster, bearg the slogan COME OUT!!, appeared late sprg 1970 advance of the gay liberatn march that marked the first anniversary of Stonewall. Hujar’s lible portras of famo avant-gar artists and drag queens, and his curly gothic landsp and animal pictur, are so fastidly exquise, so fsily exact, so reprentative of a perd past (“Speed of Life” is a very odd tle) that they immediately summon the ratty htr, the necsary obssns, and the ld-eyed digny that helped most gay men survive, and not survive, the early gay lib and AIDS years.

By the time the prottors marched agast anti-gay csar Ana Bryant Kansas Cy 1977, the gay rights movement had bee creasgly youthful and ant.

Though the 1969 NACHO meetg Kansas Cy was the largt gatherg of gay and lbian activists to date, the nference took place jt weeks after Stonewall.

THE GAY LIBERATN MOVEMENT

Their publitns created the sense of natnal muny that beme realized after Stonewall, and many homophile activists ntributed to the formatn of gay liberatn anizatns. Even Kansas Cy’s Phoenix Society helped drive the rise of gay rights, distributg those publitns that fostered new forms of activism.

The LGBT muny, pecially those of om Gay Liberatn Front New York, realized how the history we created om 1969 to 1971 was beg distorted by those who had rerd . The most famo of them were the march every July 4th at Inpennce Hall Philalphia om 1965 to 1969, which some historians mistakenly nnect to Stonewall and the first Gay Pri March 1970. Stonewall and the year that followed up to the First Gay Pri, then lled Christopher Street Gay Liberatn Day, changed everythg and everyone the LGBT muny.

HISTORY HAS OVERLOOKED THE GAY LIBERATN FRONT’S ROLE STONEWALL … UNTIL NOW

Those of om Stonewall and Gay Liberatn Front were rebellg not only agast mastream society but agast those people who marched Philalphia bee we felt they had all lost touch wh our muny. While the old learship wanted to portray the muny as women drs and men sus and ti, those at Stonewall and the founrs of Gay Liberatn Front drsed jeans and t-shirts and drag or what soon would be nsired “genrf*ck. While the old learship disdaed any public associatn wh trans people, the Gay Liberatn Front weled them as did youth and people of lor.

While those at the Philalphia march wanted to f wh middle class Ameri, those the Gay Liberatn Front wanted to work alongsi other margalized groups fightg for social jtice. To be very clear, historians have attempted to group those Philalphia march wh Stonewall and the first Gay Pri, and that’s an absolute misreprentatn of history.

GAY LIBERATN FRONT POSTERS

That first Gay Pri, created by Craig Rodwell and Ellen Broidy, was about what we of the Gay Liberatn Front had created om the ash of Stonewall. The first Gay Youth anizatn, GYNY; the first trans anizatn, STAR (Street Transvte Actn Revolutnari); the first LGBT Communy Center on Wt 3rd Street; the first monstratns agast media and police; and a ntual public prence as we took back our streets. The people who wrote on the streets and walls that first night, the people who created the send, third and fourth nights, were the founrs of Gay Liberatn Front.

There were people at Stonewall who passed by, people who crang their necks om around the rner watchg, people who tossed a stone and ran sce the police chased people up and down the street, but the spir of ristance that gave birth to the new movement was all the Gay Liberatn ont. They created a staable anizatn where there had been none before, the worlds first trans anizatn, Street Transvte Actn Revolutnari, which was a mtee of the Gay Liberatn Front, formed durg the GLF occupatn of NYU’s Weste Hall. It was Gay Liberatn Front’s LGBT Communy Center that beme STAR’S first home for homels trans people, and Marsha and Sylvia did whout public funds, trag or programs.

We marched wh the Young Lords, who fought agast opprsn of the Lato muny, and the women of Gay Liberatn Front were also major voic  the women’s movement.

Infightg the anizatn ed a spl and created the Gay Activists Alliance, which beme popular wh historians sce went back to those rpectable lookg homosexuals that they preferred reprent our muny and which were overwhelmgly whe men. From s earlit achievements om creatg the natn’s first gay youth anizatn, trans anizatns, and the first Gay Pri, GLF members went on to bee the founrs of PFLAG and Lambda Legal.

We showed the world that LGBT people get to tell our own story, and this year the members of Gay Liberatn Front claimed their rightful place the story of our muny. On the 27th June, 1969 as part of s policy of raidg and closg Gay Bars, the New York Police arrived at the Stonewall Inn to rough up the ctomers and make a few arrts. New York’s ft enuntered black and whe drag queens, gay men and lbians, sick of police btaly, and who on beg physilly provoked fought back.

On the 4th July Lbians and Gay Men om the Matache Society New York, rponse to the rts, staged a walk-out and moved to the Alternative Universy Greenwich Village where they found what beme the Gay Liberatn Front.
