Billy’s boss, the vulgar and mercenary crone Mrs. Mull (Margaret Col), uldn’t give two figs for the happs her joy mache giv to the muny: her ey are on the green, and on Billy. As the apt Col plays , we don’t know if Billy’s been sleepg wh her or not; what’s clear is that she’s irrated when a lol girl named Julie Jordan (Jsie Mueller) fds herself attracted to Billy, the qutsential “bad boy.” A rock star whout a band, Billy lik to play the role of the roer. He’s tached and footloose. Tryg to tch him is like tryg to tch a cloud. Julie, when she meets him, is not yet fully an adult and th don’t know what to be aaid of. She’s a postadolcent creature longg to have the experienc of a woman. It’s summertime, and the sky is as dark and purple as a plum. The stars pulsate like firefli, and when Julie looks at Billy you n see sparks light up her body: her attractn is based on his looks and his tough manner, pla and not so simple.</p><p class="paywall">Julie and her iend Carrie Pipperidge (Ldsay Menz, a great new star) work at a factory not far om the fairgrounds, and, when they agree to meet Billy away om the rroel, Carrie fears that there’ll be trouble. The iends live a boardg hoe attached to the factory, and if they miss curfew they’ll be out of a job. But Julie is willg to sacrifice everythg for her guy, who may never tly be her guy. Her ardor be even stronger after the First Policeman (Antoe L. Smh) warns her that Billy women for money. (Like “Caroel,” “Oklahoma!” relieved Ameri of the burn of beg portrayed, generally, as optimistic.) In “Oklahoma!,” a farm girl n’t unrstand her feelgs for a btish hired hand who works her fay’s land. Durg a dream sequence, she fantasiz that she’s been treated roughly by him, and that his world is populated by wicked women—will she be one of them? “Caroel,” which Hammerste adapted om “<a data-offer-url=" class="external-lk" data-event-click="{"element":"ExternalLk","outgogURL":"" href=" rel="nofollow noopener" target="_blank">Lilm</a>,” a 1909 stage play by the Hungarian thor Ferenc Molnár, elevat the dark unrcurrents to the surface. In the send half of the mil, Billy hs Julie—who is now his wife—and Carrie tells her to leave him. Julie ref; he’s her man for good or for ill, mostly ill. Like Stanley Kowalski wh Stella, the sexual chemistry is too strong for Julie to give up, and when Billy’s wildns leads to the evable—or the evable for a mil—she prefers to live wh the ghost of his power than do whout altogether.</p><p class="paywall">O’Brien is pecially good at teasg out the ways which women reveal their sexualy their closed, largely segregated environment. Returng om a trip to New York, where she enuntered some showgirls, Carrie talks about how provotive and excg they were. And though Carrie is supposed to be the oppose of Julie’s olr and wiser , Nettie Fowler (Renée Flemg), wh whom the young uple are livg, you get the sense that Nettie has also seen a thg or two. Like Aunt Eller “Oklahoma!,” she is a square-shoulred character; no fli settle on her, not even the young lovers’ roilg emotns and hot tempers. Unfortunately, Flemg, the famo soprano, is no actrs. The night I saw the show, she uld barely ntrol her sire to look out at the dience whenever she talked, let alone sang, as though she were the middle of a recal. The choreographer, Jt Peck, do a credible job of keepg her and the rt of the st movg, but ocsnally his work seems too exprsive for the stage: mak the space look smaller. I uldn’t tell if Henry’s tenncy to overstate at tim—somethg Mueller avoids; her Julie is all real bone and sew—had to do wh the blockg, or wh Peck and O’Brien’s wantg to e him the “right” way. And bee Henry himself wants to get right—he’s workg toward beg a te mil star—he n be too precise his “anger.” He has a lot ridg on this show, and you n feel his ambn to not only make good but <em>be</em> good.
