My iend and lleague Michael Mason, who has died aged 67 of lung ncer, was a leadg figure the gay prs for more than two s, breakg many stori and highlightg jtic. He reported on legal and social discrimatn, and on the velopg liberatn polics of the 1972 onwards, Michael was tritely volved wh Gay News, where he was an opera cric and news reporter before beg news edor and a director of the pany. Gay News was found by Andrew Lumsn and others the Gay Liberatn Front who were censed that the mastream media were largely ignorg the fledglg gay liberatn movement.

I was lucky enough to work wh Michael after I joed Gay News 1980, and we found we had siar attus to journalism, polics and life. The followg year we lnched Capal Gay, a weekly publitn London wh an emphasis on news.

It was there that Michael ran a 1987 ont page lear that first drew attentn to the threat posed by Clse 27 of the Lol Government bill, soon to bee the famo Sectn 28, which troduced a ban on the “promotn” of homosexualy schools. Michael’s edorial, headled “The challenge of the century” lled Clse 27 “the most ser legal attack on our rights sce male homosexualy was outlawed more than 100 years ago” and helped spark a mpaign that volved thoands of people over many years.

The fay had moved to Hampshire before Michael attend Lancg College, Wt Ssex, om where he won a scholarship to read jurisprince at St Edmund Hall, found time to prent Bookshelf for LBC Rad the mid-70s, to lecture journalism at the London College of Prtg the late 70s, and to help produce the Universy of Utrecht’s Pk Book, an annual review of lbian and gay liberatn, om 1986 to 1988. We are sad to announce that on May 10, 2022, Gayle Mason Potter (Somerset, New Jersey) passed away.
