And I remember very specifilly watchg the <em>Grey’s</em> Season 3 DVD extras, and Shonda was talkg about how she started that season wh Izzie her drs om the hospal’s prom, vastated on the bathroom floor, and end wh Crista cryg her weddg drs after gettg left at the altar. Shonda had created this betiful bookend, and that blew my md. I was 14, and I realized that wrg for televisn was a reer, that was a thg I uld do.</p><p data-no-id="10" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><em>Grey’s </em>was and still is my favore TV show, and I really looked up to Shonda. She had gone to USC for screenwrg. So, I said, “That’s what I’m gog to do, too. Exactly like she did. I n feel .” That really was the genis of all for me.</p><p data-no-id="11" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>BF: What was about TV and TV wrg that you loved so much?</strong></p><p data-no-id="12" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>ZS:</strong> I was born and raised Wt Virgia, and I love Wt Virgia, but I’m Black and gay and femme. It uld be isolatg at tim bee I would look around and didn’t see people who looked like me or who I uld relate to. So, I fell love wh televisn and <em>Grey’s</em>, specifilly, bee allowed me to look at Callie Torr and see this bisexual woman of lor jt dog her thg. Bailey and Richard looked like me. I uld watch that show and feel a ltle ls alone the world, and I knew I wanted to give that feelg to everyone else for the rt of my reer and the rt of my life.</p><p data-no-id="13" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The betiful thg about televisn is you let to your home. Televisn is your livg room. It’s your bedroom. It’s your bathroom. The characters are wh you for five, 10, 17 years, and they bee your iends. Can you even believe your life?</strong></p><p data-no-id="16" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>ZS:</strong> My first day at <em>Grey’s Anatomy </em>as an assistant was amazg. It was like I was given the keys to the ndy store bee now I had accs to the stori and the characters I loved so much. Walkg to the wrers’ room for the first time was such a moment for me. I felt like I’d ma . At the same time, I had a job to do. I was gettg lunch. I was the assistant to the assistants. But I wanted to add value to the show any way I uld. If I was gettg ffee, I felt like, “I will get your skny latte, honey, and ’s gog to be the bt skny latte you will get all week.” I jt wanted to ntribute.</p><p data-no-id="17" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">But I knew I didn’t want to be an assistant forever. There were staff chang Season 15, and I was offered a job as the assistant to [Executive Producers] Meg Maris and Andy Reaser. Krista [Vernoff, <em>Grey’s </em>and <em>Statn 19 </em>Shownner] explaed that that job would give me more time to wre. I knew I uld be outsi Meg and Andy’s offic, listeng to them talk stori, absorbg all that I uld, but also tryg to wre my way to the next stage of my reer.</p><p data-no-id="18" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">I wrote script after script. Lerally, I wrote a disgtg amount before eventually applyg to the Walt Disney Televisn Wrg Program. And I got ! So, the middle of Season 16, I left <em>Grey’s</em> for the program. I never thought I’d leave. I thought they’d have to force me away om that place. But a uple months later, the program reached out to Krista to see if she’d nsir staffg me as a wrer, and she soped me back up and put me on <em>Statn 19</em>. </p><p data-no-id="19" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Whenever good news happens to me, I jt lay my bed all day listeng to sad mic and starg at the ceilg <em>[lghs]</em>. That’s how I procs. I did this when I got to USC. I did this when I got my job at <em>Grey’s</em>, and I did this when I got staffed on <em>Statn 19</em>. To work so hard for this one thg and be able to achieve the same mp felt like a reflectn of how they saw me and the work I put there. Ultimately, I was jt really proud.</p><p data-no-id="20" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>BF: What n you tell about the very first episo of TV you wrote?</strong></p><p data-no-id="21" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>ZS:</strong> At the begng of the season, we pched episo ias to Krista. I pched an episo wh drag queens, and she said, “Absolutely! We’re dog that.” It was so ol to be wrg the characters I felt so passnate about. It’s four drag queens [one played by Shangela, of <em>Drag Race</em> fame] on work televisn. That wouldn’t have happened whout Krista and Kiley [Donovan, Co-Executive Producer] supportg that all the way through. It felt really special. </p><p data-no-id="22" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Even throughout the prep procs, I was gettg emails sayg, “How do this wig look?” I was like, “Oh my goodns! This is my job? Pickg wigs?” I uldn’t believe . And [Executive Producer] Paris Barclay was my director. He’s so wonrful! We were havg the gayt, bt time on set. Lerally, every star aligned.</p><p data-no-id="23" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">My hope is that someone like me is gog to be watchg this the South or the Midwt or wherever and say, “I see people on screen that I relate to.” I feel so lucky that I got to do that my first episo.</p><p data-no-id="24" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0"><strong>BF: I want to talk about what all the </strong><strong><em>Grey</em></strong><strong>’s fans are talkg about the days: Dr. Zanr Perez. Then Season 16, Andy Reaser seemed hellbent on gettg a character like me on the show, but Zanr kept gettg cut out. Fally, Kiley wrote him to “Let’s All Go to the Bar,” and he stuck. I read the part the wrers’ room and the st table read. The part got a lot of lghs.</p><p data-no-id="26" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">Then — and I learned later that Andy had planted the seed — Krista looked at me and said, “I thk you should jt play Zanr. Would you want to?” Absolutely I did. She asked if I had any actg experience. I said, “Ummmm. To watch that show as a teenager, and then ’s still on when I’m an adult. And then I got to work on after I graduated. And then ’s still on long enough that I got to act … I’m jt so grateful to ntribute to that legacy, whether as an assistant gettg ffee or gettg to say l as Zanr. Okay, to be fair to the universe <em>[lghs]</em>, I’m a very specific person. I’m Black. I’m gay. I’m super femme. I’m fe wh he/him pronouns, but mentally, I don’t fully align wh men even though I’m fortable my body. And I’m also chunky! So, to pture all of that on TV is a very hard thg. There are not a lot of , but there are more of than you thk!</p><p data-no-id="33" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">The clost I’ve e is watchg <em>Pose</em>. That was the very first time I’d seen characters a scripted show that really nnected wh me. Even though those characters are primarily transgenr women, I still felt nnected to them a very specific way that I hadn’t experienced before. When I was first playg Zanr, I wasn’t even thkg about that. It was jt this fun, amazg thg I got to do. But to know that I, this chunky, Black, gay femme om Wt Virgia, uld reprent someone else who had been cravg that reprentatn felt really special. It took me back to when I was a teenager and sperately wantg someone on TV to intify wh. The fact that I’m dog that now for someone else still baffl me.</p><p data-no-id="36" class="css-18vfmjb et3p2gv0">As creativ, most of are here to nnect wh people that way. I want to be a creator, a shownner. If I don’t see more characters like me on screen until I wre them, that’s okay bee I’m gog to be wrg them. And not jt puttg them on screen, but makg them fully veloped characters wh jobs and love liv and fai, the good and the bad, the posiv and the negativ.
