Gil Hymer was sixteen years old when he me out of the closet. When he left home, he met his partner through a nscns-raisg group the gay muny. They beme fast iends, and bond easily over their mutual love for mic. They were together for 40 years. "We sort of beme very entrenched our own relatnship, and didn't make a lot of iends outsi," he explas. When his partner died and he entered his goln years, Hymer found himself longg for muny. For many people who are over 50 years old and LGBTQ+, n be difficult to make new iends. While bars the Gay Village are an optn for younger people, the olr generatn are often left whout a space to nnect wh others their own age. Hymer, however, found support through a group lled Gay and Grey Montreal, a social group for people 50 and over who are LGBTQ+. They meet for barbecu, go out for walks, and offer a safe space for people to be themselv. For now though, bee of the panmic, the group meets primarily through vio lls. Gil rells a special moment he had wh the group. "[They] me to one of the Gilbert and Sullivan operettas I was sgg ," he says. "It really touched me that they would go all the way out to the Wt Island to do that." Bce Cameron found Gay and Grey 2018 . The goal was to unteract the homophobia that some senrs might experience as they get olr, and to allow them to teract fortably wh people of the same orientatn, genr inty, or who share siar experienc. As Cameron explas, many senrs go back to the closet when they enter rintial re. "They have to be ncerned aga about people beg homophobic," he says. "They n't really be ee, and this is one of the last plac where they're gog to live." Through Gay and Grey, Cameron also hop to fight ageism that exists wh the LGBTQ+ muny. "Whether you're 40, 50, 60, or 70, you still have needs, you still have wants, you still have sir," he said. "And people should be open and acceptg of that." By nnectg olr members to younger people the LGBTQ+ muny, Bce hop to bridge the divi between members of the muny. "The olr generatn, they lived through gay liberatn. They remember a time when beg themselv was actually illegal," Nikki Mach, an outreach -ordator for Gay and Grey, explas. "That's an experience that not many of today, who are lennials or younger, have any experience wh." One of the group's members, K. David Brody, was volved a urt se fightg for the right to a widower's pensn after his partner died. At the time, the provce of Quebec did not regnize gay upl' rights to the pensn. The members of Gay and Grey have a msage for young people who may be stgglg to e out of the closet. As Cameron puts : "Be proud of who you are. The people who aren't acceptg, that's their issue.
